Legendary investor Warren Buffett\u2002<\/u><\/a>likened tariffs to \u201can act of war\u201d in a new interview as President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>doubles down on his embrace of the economic strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview that aired Sunday on CBS News, anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell asked Buffett about the effects tariffs will have on the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTariffs are actually, we\u2019ve had a lot of experience with them,\u201d Buffett said in response. \u201cThey\u2019re an act of war, to some degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On tariffs\u2019 impact on inflation, Buffett said, \u201cOver time, they are a tax on goods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean, the Tooth Fairy doesn\u2019t pay \u2019em,\u201d he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buffett said it\u2019s important in economics to look a step ahead and ask, \u201cAnd then what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou always have to ask that question in economics,\u201d he said. \u201cYou always say, \u2018And then what?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interview aired as Trump\u2019s 25-percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico are slated to take effect Tuesday. Earlier on Monday, Trump announced<\/u><\/a> that there was no more room for dealmaking before the 30-day delay expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe tariffs, they\u2019re all set. They go into effect tomorrow,\u201d Trump said, adding there\u2019s \u201cno room left for Mexico or Canada\u201d to make a deal before midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had warned last week that the tariffs will go forward after he delayed them<\/u><\/a> for a month following conversations with the Canadian and Mexican leaders, during which they agreed to action to address the flow of drugs at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buffett joined O\u2019Donnell for a documentary<\/u><\/a> about his close friend, the late Katharine Graham, longtime publisher of The Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buffett refrained from commenting on the economy during the interview in an apparent acknowledgment of the power his words have to sway the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I think that\u2019s the most interesting subject in the world, but I won\u2019t talk, I can\u2019t talk about it, though. I really can\u2019t,\u201d he said when asked for his thoughts on the state of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
