Ontario Premier Doug Ford\u2002<\/u><\/a>said Monday he is prepared to cut off electricity exports to the U.S. if President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods go through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything \u2014 including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,\u201d Ford told reporters at a mining convention in downtown Toronto, the Toronto Sun reported<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ford doubled down on his pledge to retaliate by matching tariffs, noting the U.S. is a major customer of Canada\u2019s electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey rely on our energy. They need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we\u2019re going to come back twice as hard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Sun reported Ford said he would go dollar-for-dollar in matching tariffs: \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ford suggested the federal and provincial governments are unified in their approach to fighting U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe provinces have a big say in it, but it\u2019s the federal government that\u2019s leading the charge, and we\u2019re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder no matter who\u2019s in the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI [didn\u2019t] start this tariff war, but we\u2019re going to win this tariff war,\u201d Ford added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The remarks come as Trump announced Monday<\/u><\/a> that the 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico will officially go into effect Tuesday, saying there is no more room for dealmaking before the 30-day delay expires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe tariffs, they\u2019re all set. They go into effect tomorrow,\u201d Trump said, adding there\u2019s \u201cno room left for Mexico or Canada\u201d to make a deal before midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
