{"id":39087,"date":"2025-02-28T01:52:37","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T07:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=39087"},"modified":"2025-02-28T01:52:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T07:52:52","slug":"man-pardoned-for-jan-6-crime-feared-returning-to-jail-before-deputy-killed-him-in-traffic-stop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=39087","title":{"rendered":"Man pardoned for Jan. 6 crime feared returning to jail before deputy killed him in traffic stop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An Indiana man who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and had recently been pardoned by President Donald Trump told authorities that he couldn&#8217;t afford to be in legal trouble just before&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/indiana-man-pardoned-jan-6-crimes-killed-traffic-stop-shooting-deputy-rcna189502\">a sheriff\u2019s deputy fatally shot him during a traffic stop<\/a>&nbsp;last month, body camera video released Thursday shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A special prosecutor<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>said the Jasper County sheriff\u2019s deputy was legally justified in shooting Matthew Huttle, 42, on Jan. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle ran to his vehicle, said he would shoot himself and raised a handgun after he was told he was under arrest for a traffic-related felony, and the deputy shot him after a struggle, special prosecutor Chris Vawter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/sheriffs\/jasper\/files\/Jasper-County-OIS-Final-Report.pdf\">said in a statement<\/a>&nbsp;released with video of the traffic stop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI can\u2019t do it. I can\u2019t go to jail for this, sir,&#8221; Huttle told the deputy as they stood at the rear of Huttle\u2019s vehicle, body camera video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle runs toward the driver\u2019s side door as the deputy yells, \u201cDon\u2019t you do it, buddy,\u201d and Huttle gets in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019m shooting myself,\u201d Huttle says. The deputy says \u201cNo, no, no\u201d and fires, the video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Vawter said that there was a struggle and that the deputy saw Huttle raise a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The video is blurred during the shooting, and it is unclear what happened inside the vehicle right before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Investigators later found a loaded 9 mm handgun and ammunition in the car, Vawter said. \u201cDash camera footage confirmed that Huttle raised an object while inside the vehicle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle was among the 1,500 people convicted or charged in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trump-set-pardon-defendants-stormed-capitol-jan-6-2021-rcna187735\">pardoned by Trump last month<\/a>&nbsp;on the first day of his second presidential term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In November 2023, Huttle pleaded guilty to one count of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds and was sentenced to six months in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At the start of the traffic stop, Huttle tells the deputy, \u201cI just want to let you know that I\u2019m a January 6 defendant,\u201d the video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI stormed the Capitol. I\u2019m waiting on my pardon,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cI can\u2019t really afford to get into any trouble right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle was pulled over for going 70 mph in a 55-mph zone, the deputy tells him in the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle tells the deputy that he is driving without a license and waiting on a \u201chardship license,\u201d which allows people who have suspended licenses to have some driving privileges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Huttle was found to be a habitual traffic violator, which is a felony, Vawter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While the shooting happened in Jasper County, the Clinton County Prosecutor\u2019s Office was called in to complete an independent review of the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The deputy was legally justified in using deadly force to defend himself,\u201d Vawter said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There was probable cause to arrest Huttle on a felony charge, and when Huttle reached for the weapon, he posed an imminent risk to the deputy, Vawter said. The investigation is closed, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The deputy had been placed on administrative leave, which is routine after a shooting, officials said at the time.
