The papal thriller \u201cConclave<\/a>\u201d won best ensemble and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet took best actor at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards<\/a> on Sunday, a pair of twists that added a few final wrinkles to an unusually unpredictable awards season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In winning the guild\u2019s top award, Edward Berger\u2019s Vatican-set drama<\/a> triumphed just as the Catholic Church was praying for the health of Pope Francis, who remained in critical condition<\/a> Sunday after an asthmatic respiratory crisis. \u201cConclave\u201d dramatizes the fictional election of a new pope.<\/a> Earlier in the evening onstage, Isabella Rossellini shared the cast\u2019s best wishes for Pope Francis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the momentum going into the SAG Awards was with Sean Baker\u2019s \u201cAnora,\u201d<\/a> which had won with the producers, directors and writers guilds. Now, with \u201cConclave\u201d winning with the actors and at the BAFTAs, what will nab best picture in a week\u2019s time at the Academy Awards<\/a> is, again, anyone\u2019s guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWow,\u201d said \u201cConclave\u201d star Ralph Fiennes taking the stage. \u201cI\u2019ve not been elected to speak. I\u2019ve been designated to speak on behalf of our conclave, our ensemble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wasn\u2019t the only surprise in the ceremony held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and streamed lived by Netflix. Chalamet\u2019s best actor win upset \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d star Adrien Brody and put the 29-year-old on course to possibly win his first Academy Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chalamet looked visibly surprised when his name was announced at the ceremony. But once he reached the staged,\u00a0the \u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d star<\/a>\u00a0spoke with composure and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe truth is, this was 5 \u00bd years of my life,\u201d said Chalamet. \u201cI poured everything I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero. It was the honor of a lifetime playing him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then added: \u201cThe truth is, I\u2019m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don\u2019t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other Oscar favorites \u2014 Demi Moore, Zoe Salda\u00f1a and Kieran Culkin \u2014 all won. The SAG Awards are closely watched as an Oscar preview. Their picks don\u2019t always align exactly with those of the film academy, but they often nearly do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last three best ensemble winners \u2014 \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once\u201d and \u201cCODA\u201d \u2014 all went on to win best picture at the Oscars. All but one of the SAG acting winners of the last three years has also won the Oscar. (The sole exception was Lily Gladstone, who won SAG\u2019s award for female actor last year for \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d but the Oscar trophy went to Emma Stone for \u201cPoor Things\u201d.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moore seemingly solidified her Oscar chances by following up her Golden Globe win for her performance in \u201cThe Substance.\u201d<\/a> Moore, whose campaign was boosted by her speech about being pigeonholed a \u201cpopcorn actress,\u201d has traded awards with \u201cAnora\u201d breakthrough Mikey Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we believe is so much more powerful than what we think,\u201d said Moore. \u201cThe saying, \u2018I\u2019ll believe it when I see it\u2019 \u2014 the reality is when I believe it, I will see it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SAG Awards unfolded against the backdrop of the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that began in early January<\/a>. Those fires forced the guild to cancel its in-person nominations announcement and launch a disaster relief fund for SAG-AFTRA members affected. Host Kristen Bell introduced attending firefighters as \u201cthe most attractive tables\u201d among a sea of stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jane Fonda, 87, given the guild\u2019s Life Achievement Award,<\/a> provided the evening with its most passionately political moment. Fonda, a famed activist, spoke indirectly about President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are in our documentary moment,\u201d said Fonda. \u201cThis is it. And it\u2019s not a rehearsal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fonda added that \u201cwoke just means you give a damn about other people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA whole lot of people are going to be hurt by what\u2019s happening, by what\u2019s coming our way,\u201d said Fonda. \u201cWe are going to need a big tent to resist what\u2019s coming at us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean Smart, who had advocated for canceling award shows<\/a> because of the wildfires<\/a>, won best female actor in a comedy series for \u201cHacks.\u201d Smart didn\u2019t attend, but participated in a pre-taped introduction as her character, Deborah Vance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also not in attendance: Martin Short, though he upset Jeremy Allen White to win best male actor in a comedy series for \u201cOnly Murders in the Building.\u201d The Hulu series also won for best comedy ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait, we never win. This is so weird,\u201d said Selena Gomez. \u201cMarty and Steve (Martin) aren\u2019t here because, you know, they don\u2019t really care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colin Farrell won his first SAG award, for his performance in \u201cThe Penguin\u201d and also became the first winner ever introduced, by Jamie Lee Curtis, as \u201cthe man who gave me Covid at the Golden Globes.\u201d Farrell bounded to the stage and promptly responded, \u201cGuilty as charged,\u201d before blaming Brendan Gleeson for giving it to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The night\u2019s first televised award went to Culkin, who has won just about every award in the category for \u201cA Real Pain.\u201d<\/a> Gripping the SAG trophy, he could quickly tell the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is funny that the heaviest of all awards is given by actors,\u201d said Culkin, who characteristically riffed his way through a rambling acceptance speech before swearing sincerity: \u201cBelieve it or not, this actually means a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netflix\u2019s \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez,\u201d which has seen its awards hopes largely dashed by controversy<\/a> over old tweets by lead actor Karla Sofia Gasc\u00f3n, took home the award for best female supporting actor, for Oscar favorite Salda\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Netflix\u2019s second time around streaming the awards, it inserted ads sporadically, like a traditional broadcast. Last year, downtimes were occupied by backstage interviews. Audio issues occasionally marred the broadcast, including brief interruptions of Fonda\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After romps at the Emmys<\/a> and Golden Globes<\/a>, \u201cSh\u014dgun\u201d kept up its dominance. The FX series won best drama series ensemble, along with acting awards for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai and for best stunt ensemble. The corresponding award for film went to the stunt performer ode \u201cThe Fall Guy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
