{"id":38724,"date":"2025-02-19T21:24:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T03:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=38724"},"modified":"2025-02-19T21:24:44","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T03:24:44","slug":"senior-pentagon-official-acknowledges-budget-cuts-under-consideration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=38724","title":{"rendered":"Senior Pentagon official acknowledges budget cuts under consideration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A senior Pentagon official on Wednesday acknowledged the agency was considering major budget cuts to the tune of 8 percent every year for the next five years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a statement, Acting Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses said the cuts were being conceived to pay for other Trump administration defense priorities, including a desired \u201cIron Dome for America\u201d missile defense system and border security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He added that DOD looks to \u201ccease unnecessary spending that set our military back\u201d such as on climate change programs and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Department will develop a list of potential offsets that could be used to fund these priorities, as well as to refocus the Department on its core mission of deterring and winning wars,\u201d Salesses said. \u201cThe offsets are targeted at 8% of the Biden Administration\u2019s FY26 budget, totaling around $50 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/02\/19\/trump-pentagon-budget-cuts\/\"><u>The Washington Post<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;first reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered top defense officials to draw up proposed cuts by&nbsp;Feb. 24, according to a Tuesday memo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The document included a list of 17 categories that the Trump administration wants exempt from the budget slashing, including operations at the southern U.S. border, nuclear weapon and missile defense modernization, and acquisition of one-way attack drones and other munitions, the Post reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Department of Defense is conducting this review to ensure we are making the best use of the taxpayers\u2019 dollars in a way that delivers on the President Trump\u2019s defense priorities efficiently and effectively,\u201d Salesses said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The cuts are likely to be a hard sell to Congress.
