Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell\u2002<\/u><\/a>(Ky.) on Wednesday warned of \u201cbig, lingering concerns\u201d with President Trump\u2019s tariff plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn recent weeks, the president sought to impose sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, as well as key imports, such as steel and aluminum,\u201d McConnell said in an opinion piece for The Courier Journal<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile the administration walked back plans to levy 25% duties on imports from Mexico and Canada \u2014 paused now for 30 days as both nations brokered deals to tighten border security and crack down on illegal drugs \u2014 the president\u2019s aggressive proposals leave big, lingering concerns for American industry and workers,\u201d the Kentucky Republican added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>signed orders imposing<\/u><\/a> 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products. Within the next few days, Trump came to an agreement<\/u><\/a> with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2002<\/u><\/a>and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum\u2002<\/u><\/a>to delay tariffs for at least<\/u><\/a> a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also imposed a 10 percent tariff on all imports from China, prompting China to announce retaliatory tariffs targeting liquefied natural gas, coal, farm machinery and other products from the United States. On Monday, he signed off on new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports<\/u><\/a> into the United States to crack down on attempts by China and Russia to evade penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIndeed, it\u2019s high time for America\u2019s closest neighbors to take the crisis at our border seriously. But no matter our best intentions, tariffs are bad policy,\u201d McConnell said. \u201cAs Sen. Rand Paul\u2002<\/u><\/a>put it: \u2018Tariffs are simply taxes \u2026 Taxing trade will mean less trade and higher prices.\u2019 So Republicans ought to be clear-eyed about the full, unadulterated impact of tariffs as we work to restore sound fiscal policy to our government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell recently criticized tariffs<\/u><\/a> on Canada and Mexico from Trump during an interview with Lesley Stahl\u2002<\/u><\/a>on CBS\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt will drive the cost of everything up. In other words, it will be paid for by American consumers. I mean, why would you want to get into a fight with your allies over this?\u201d McConnell said in the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
