Gavin Newsom signed laws Friday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-newsom-trump-special-session-legislature-d41c34b5530b9023552f1be234768700\">setting aside $50 million<\/a>&nbsp;to help the state protect its policies from challenges by the Trump administration and defend immigrants amid the president&#8217;s mass-deportation plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One of the laws allocates $25 million for the state Department of Justice to fight legal battles against the federal government, and another sets aside $25 million in part for legal groups to defend immigrants facing possible deportation. During his first presidency, Trump sparred with California over climate laws, water policy, immigrant rights and more, and the state filed or joined more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2a41bfdffd344b3a954a98bd44bd9ac9\">100 legal actions<\/a>&nbsp;against the administration. The same fights are reemerging in the early days of Trump&#8217;s second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCalifornians are being threatened by an out-of-control administration that doesn\u2019t care about the Constitution and thinks there are no limits to its power,\u201d said Democratic Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, in a statement earlier this week. \u201cThat is why we are delivering legislation that will allocate resources to defend Californians from this urgent threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The move comes a day after the Democratic governor returned from Washington, where he met with Trump and members of Congress to try to secure&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-wildfires-conditional-aid-washington-trump-johnson-12c779b96e04d564802d4d06348aa0fc\">federal disaster aid<\/a>&nbsp;for the devastating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-los-angeles-wildfires-eaton-palisides-urban-area-a162c86589b9102a85c510246539ab72\">Los Angeles-area wildfires<\/a>&nbsp;that ripped through neighborhoods in January, killing more than two dozen people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Newsom signed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-fire-relief-newsom-la-special-session-ab1e62d70198b5a7086e77932da93be9\">$2.5 billion package for fire relief<\/a>&nbsp;into law last month to help fund the state\u2019s disaster response including evacuations, sheltering survivors and removing household hazardous waste. His administration has said they expect the federal government to reimburse the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican lawmakers have criticized the funding for lawsuits, saying the focus on Trump is distracting as the Los Angeles area recovers from the fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis slush fund isn\u2019t about solving any real problems \u2014 it\u2019s a political stunt designed to distract from the urgent issues our state faces and it won\u2019t bode well for fire victims,\u201d Republican Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones said in a statement earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Critics have also said the legislation doesn\u2019t ensure that funding wouldn\u2019t be used to defend immigrants without legal status who have been convicted of serious felonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After signing the funding into law, Newsom said the money wasn&#8217;t intended to be used for that purpose, and he encouraged lawmakers to pass subsequent legislation if clarifying that is needed. He said in a statement that the funding will assist legal groups in \u201csafeguarding the civil rights of California\u2019s most vulnerable residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Newsom&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-donald-trump-gavin-newsom-special-session-32511d5887409d68d692e094ed50a272\">announced the plan<\/a>&nbsp;to safeguard the state&#8217;s policies days after Trump\u2019s election in November. He convened the Legislature in a special session to pass the bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The state is used to taking the federal government to court over Trump actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">California&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-c992f44856519c084d5c206c84dfe308\">sued the Republican president&#8217;s administration<\/a>&nbsp;more than 120 times during his first term, according to the attorney general\u2019s office.
