State department signs off on bombs and missiles sales that the US claims would help Israel \u2018defend its borders\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United States has announced the approval of the sale of more than $7.4bn in bombs, missiles and related equipment to Israel<\/a>, which has used American-made weapons to devastating effect during the war in Gaza.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n The state department has signed off on the sale of $6.75bn in bombs, guidance kits and fuses, in addition to $660m in Hellfire missiles, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The proposed sale of the bombs \u201cimproves Israel\u2019s capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and serves as a deterrent to regional threats\u201d, the DSCA said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The missile sale would \u201cimprove Israel\u2019s capability to meet current and future threats by improving the ability of the Israeli Air Force to defend Israel\u2019s borders, vital infrastructure, and population centers\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Israel launched a hugely destructive offensive in Gaza in October 2023 in response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas that month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The war has devastated much of Gaza resulting in the displacement of much of its population, but a ceasefire has been in effect since last month, providing for the release of hostages seized by Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In response to concerns over civilian deaths, then President Joe Biden\u2019s administration blocked a shipment of 2,000lb bombs to Israel\u2002<\/a>\u2013 larger than those in the latest proposed sale \u2013 but his successor Donald Trump reportedly approved the shipment after returning to office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While the state department has approved the sale of the bombs and missiles, the transactions still need to be approved by Congress, which is unlikely to block the provision of the weapons to Washington\u2019s closest ally in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
