{"id":38109,"date":"2025-02-05T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T23:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=38109"},"modified":"2025-02-05T21:11:37","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T03:11:37","slug":"thousands-protest-usaid-workers-being-recalled-from-abroad-or-put-on-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=38109","title":{"rendered":"Thousands protest USAid workers being recalled from abroad or put on leave"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">News comes after nearly a thousand contractors laid off or furloughed, and USAid website and X account removed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Thousands gathered at the US Capitol on Wednesday after the shock announcement on Tuesday evening that the US Agency for International Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/usaid\">USAid<\/a>) was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/04\/trump-us-aid-workers-overseas\">putting nearly all of its employees on leave<\/a>&nbsp;and recalling thousands of officers from their postings abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The news came only days after nearly a thousand contractors were laid off or furloughed, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/usaid\">USAid<\/a>&nbsp;website was taken down, and its X account was deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Protesters gathered near the Capitol under chilly, overcast skies and chanted: \u201cLet us work!\u201d and \u201cUSAid! USAid!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are in a very, very dire place,\u201d Jeremy Konyndyk, a top USAid health official under Barack Obama and Joe Biden, told the crowd. \u201cThe attempt to kill USAid will kill people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Competitors such as Russia and China were cheering this decision, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His voice rose as he addressed members of Congress in the halls behind him \u2013 especially lawmakers, he said, who had supported the agency and its work for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYou know that what is being said about USAid is not true,\u201d Konyndyk said. \u201cSpeak up! Where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is a dictatorship in the making,\u201d Ed Markey, a senator from Massachusetts, told the crowd. \u201cThis is an example\u201d of what the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;can do to agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are the moral force of the world,\u201d Markey said. \u201cThe only way to take back our government is to take to the streets by the millions to demand justice, not just for our country but for people around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Nearly all of USAid\u2019s work, which includes preventing HIV and famine as well as rebuilding nations after conflict and improving education, was halted unexpectedly on 24 January for a 90-day review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Experts say the erasure of the agency is a test run for the Trump administration, which has also put agencies such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/03\/trump-education-department\">Department of Education<\/a>&nbsp;and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) in its crosshairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is showing that you can do a slash-and-burn to the American governmental apparatus, including foreign aid,\u201d Joia Mukherjee, chief medical officer of the non-profit Partners in Health, told the Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">While USAid has enjoyed bipartisan support in the past, it\u2019s now a target for conservatives. But Mukherjee said that nothing about aid work had changed in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think the fidelity to Trump changed,\u201d she said. Members of Congress are \u201cafraid of Trump\u201d, she added. \u201cThis is just a loyalty test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Pete Marocco, who was allegedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/01\/peter-marocco-trump-usaid\">photographed and filmed<\/a>&nbsp;at the January 6 riots, appeared to threaten aid workers with military action if they didn\u2019t comply with evacuation orders, according to a source at USAid who read the recall letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Marocco was named deputy administrator of USAid on Monday by the secretary of state, Marco Rubio. That position needs confirmation by the US Senate before being filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rubio seized control of the agency to fold it into the state department after alleging that officials at the agency had been too \u201cindependent\u201d, Rubio told reporters on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The aid agency was founded in 1961, but was enshrined into law as an independent agency by Congress in 1998. Only lawmakers have the power to dismantle or move it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhat\u2019s happening is unconstitutional and illegal,\u201d said Sharon Baker, who worked on grants and contracts for USAid for 11 years before retiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s enormous \u2013 it affects all Americans,\u201d she said, before adding of USAid staff: \u201cIn global emergencies, they\u2019re the first responders. [After earthquakes and tsunamis], they\u2019re the ones who are there first. You see airplanes offloading supplies that say \u2018from the American people\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The move to stop work and dissolve the agency into the state department without direction from Congress is unprecedented, said one contractor who worked for USAid for 20 years before being furloughed last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt puts us and the world in danger in a way it never has before,\u201d said the contractor, who requested anonymity to protect their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think this is Project 2025 in action. They\u2019re doing what they said they would do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The stop-work order is \u201cthe most catastrophic thing we\u2019ve seen in foreign aid since we started working on famine in Ethiopia in the 80s\u201d, said Crickett Nicovich, who works for the non-profit Results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCongress needs to stand up and defend USAid.
