They\u2019ve got to stop people from pouring into our country, and we\u2019ve stopped it. They haven\u2019t stopped it. We\u2019ve stopped it,\u201d Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews. \u201cThey have to stop people pouring in, and we have to stop fentanyl. And that includes China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The president said he will speak with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as Mexico leadership, not specifying who, on Monday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI don\u2019t expect anything very dramatic. We put tariffs on. They owe us a lot of money, and I\u2019m sure they\u2019re going to pay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5121102-trump-tariffs-china-canada-mexico\/\"><u>on Saturday signed off<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on 25 percent tariffs on Canada, 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and 10 percent tariffs on China, which appear likely to set off a significant trade war. The move led to swift responses from all three nations, including Canadian Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/justin-trudeau\/\"><u>Justin Trudeau\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Sunday night saying that Canada&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/us\/politics\/canada-trump-tariffs.html\"><u>would impose<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;25 percent tariffs on more than $100 billion in U.S. goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Asked if he was considering responding to Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs, Trump suggested it was possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a one-way street. We subsidize Canada to the tune of about $200 billion a year. And for what? What do we get out of it? We don\u2019t get anything out of it,\u201d Trump said. \u201cSomething is going to happen there. If they want to play the game, I don\u2019t mind, we can play the game all they want. Mexico, we\u2019ve had very good talks with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mexican President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/claudia-sheinbaum\/\"><u>Claudia Sheinbaum\u2002<\/u><\/a>said in a post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Claudiashein\/status\/1885855974407446726\"><u>on X<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in Spanish that her team was working on a response that included measures to defend her country\u2019s interests, though specific steps were not immediately clear. And, China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce said it would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/5121368-china-files-legal-case-us-wto-tariffs\/\"><u>file a legal case<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;against the United States at the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump also suggested he could impose tariffs on the European Union (EU), and potentially the United Kingdom, after he has threatened to do so&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/international\/5050427-donald-trump-tariffs-eu-european-union\/\"><u>if they don\u2019t purchase<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;large quantities of American oil and gas to make up for its growing deficit with the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe UK is way out of line, and we\u2019ll see. The UK, but European Union is really out of line. UK is out of line but I\u2019m sure that one, I think that one can be worked out. But the European Union, it\u2019s an atrocity what they\u2019ve done,\u201d he said on Sunday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The EU purchases the lion\u2019s share of American oil and gas and no additional volumes are available unless the U.S. increases output or volumes are re-routed through Asia,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-says-eu-should-make-up-tremendous-deficit-with-us-by-purchasing-its-oil-2024-12-20\/\"><u>Reuters reported<\/u><\/a>, citing U.S. data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Experts have repeatedly warned that tariffs could lead to higher costs that companies will pass onto consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank, estimated Trump\u2019s tariffs announced Saturday would result in what amounts to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/research\/all\/federal\/trump-tariffs-trade-war\/\"><u>an average tax increase<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of $830 per household in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe may have short term a&nbsp;little pain, and people understand that. But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world,\u201d the president told reporters, echoing comments from earlier in the day. \u201cWe have deficits with almost every country, not every country, but almost, and we\u2019re going to change it.
