His legacy will live on forever. We extend our deepest condolences to his family &amp; loved ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Scott Hamilton,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/hall-of-fame\/hall-of-fame-members\/scott-hamilton\">who won gold in 1984<\/a>, posted of picture of he and Button with the emoji of a broken heart, shortly after word of his death spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An 18-year-old Button<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>first came to prominence in 1948, winning Olympic gold in St. Moritz, Switzerland, by being the first skater to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/news\/unprecedented-jump-makes-bright-button-figure-skating-champion\">\u2002land a double axel<\/a>&nbsp;in competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/news\/figure-skating-101-olympic-history\">He followed up\u2002<\/a>the groundbreaking effort by sticking the first-ever triple loop and innovating the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/national-international\/dick-button-back-to-back-figure-skating-gold-olympics\/2051905\/\">Button camel<\/a>,\u201d now called the flying camel spin, in his gold-medal-winning effort in Oslo, Norway, in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">No man would win back-to-back individual gold medals until Japan&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/athletes\/yuzuru-hanyu\">Yuzuru Hanyu<\/a>&nbsp;won it all in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/olympics\/news\/yuzuru-hanyu-retires-figure-skating\">2014 and repeated in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Button&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gocrimson.com\/sports\/2020\/5\/5\/information-mediacenter-Alumni-Media-Center.aspx?id=120\">graduated from Harvard University<\/a>&nbsp;in 1952 and got his law degree there in 1955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When he was done with competition, Button kept skating with the Ice Capades and Holiday on Ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Button&#8217;s lasting legacy came, not with skates, but with microphones and cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He commented on figure skating for CBS in 1960 at the Olympics in Squaw Valley, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Audiences reveled in Button&#8217;s wit and brutal honesty, making him an Olympic staple. For generations of Americans, Button&#8217;s voice was synonymous with the sport itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He provided figure skating analysis for NBC at the Winter Games in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/nbc-broadcast-olympics-24-5-hours-day-wbna10929801\">2006 in Turin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/nbc-broadcast-olympics-24-5-hours-day-wbna10929801\">, Italy,<\/a>&nbsp;and 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, before he was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNo other figure skater embodies the sport as much as Dick Button.
