{"id":3785,"date":"2023-01-09T05:11:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T11:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3785"},"modified":"2023-03-21T02:35:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T07:35:11","slug":"2-nyc-hospitals-dodge-nurse-strike-as","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3785","title":{"rendered":"<strong>2 NYC hospitals dodge nurse strike as others prep for \u2018really bad situation\u2019<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two of four city hospitals facing a\u00a0looming nurses strike\u00a0reached a last-minute agreement with the union Sunday \u2014 as a top doc at another facility warned of a \u201creally bad situation\u201d if staffers walk out.<br \/>\nNurses at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West came to an agreement with management Sunday afternoon, even as thousands of other nurses prepared to strike at 6 a.m. Monday at Mount Sinai\u2019s main campus and Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is not a good thing for us, for the patients \u2026 We are really, really in a bad situation,\u201d a Mt. Sinai obstetrics higher-up told his staff at the end of a call Sunday, preparing them for the possibility they will have to deliver their patients\u2019 babies at Lenox Hill Hospital or NYU Langone, according to audio obtained by The Post.<br \/>\nThe chief doctor and his team directed physicians to begin calling patients to prepare them for the possibility of a strike and warned that they may not be able to be present for delivery if they haven\u2019t received credentials for the other hospitals.<br \/>\nMount Sinai Morningside\/West are the latest hospitals to reach an agreement with its nurses after 16,000 members of the New York State Nurses Association authorized a strike Dec. 30, giving affected hospitals a 10-day deadline to reach a deal.<br \/>\nMount Sinai management, who employ 3,628 nurses at their main campus, walked out on negotiations amid an impasse Thursday but returned to the bargaining table Sunday.<br \/>\nThe massive medical complex and its competitors are beset by understaffing and scheduling practices that have left nurses spread thin, according to union leaders.<br \/>\n\u201cThe No. 1 issue is the crisis of understaffing,\u201d NYSNA President Nancy Hagans told reporters amid negotiations Sunday morning.<br \/>\nThe emergency room at the Bronx\u2019s Montefiore, where the union has 3,476 members, \u201cis often so overcrowded that patients are admitted in beds in a hallway instead of hospital rooms,\u201d Hagans said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are here to negotiate in good faith, to make sure that the nurses have enough resources to care for the patients.\u201d<br \/>\nA representative for Mount Sinai heralded the agreement reached for Mount Sinai Morningside\/West and said the \u201cexact wage agreement\u201d had been offered to nurses at the main campus, too.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are continuing to actively\u00a0negotiate\u00a0in good faith with NYSNA and hope they will accept our offer \u2013 which would provide an additional $51,000 in cash compensation for each nurse and $19,500 in medical and pension payment benefits over three years,\u201d spokeswoman Lucia Lee said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/08\/nyc-hosp-dodges-nurse-strike-as-others-prep-for-really-bad-situation\/\">Nypost<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two of four city hospitals facing a\u00a0looming nurses strike\u00a0reached a last-minute agreement with the union Sunday \u2014 as a top doc at another facility warned of a \u201creally bad situation\u201d if staffers walk out.
