Colombian President Gustavo Petro\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Sunday ordered an increase of import tariffs on goods from the United States in retaliation to President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>tariffs and sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petro, in a post on the social platform X<\/u><\/a>, said he ordered the \u201cforeign trade minister to raise import tariffs from the U.S. by 25%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerican products whose price will rise within the national economy must be replaced by national production, and the government will help in this regard,\u201d the post continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier Sunday, President Trump slapped Colombia with 25 percent tariffs<\/u><\/a> on all goods coming into the U.S., and he issued a travel ban and immediate visa revocations on \u201cGovernment Officials, and all Allies and Supporters,\u201d among other measures, after the South American country rejected two planes carrying migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia\u2019s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people,\u201d Trump said in a post on Truth Social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump added that the Colombian president\u2019s \u201cdenial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States\u201d and that he had \u201cdirected my Administration to immediately take the following urgent and decisive retaliatory measures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday morning, Petro said he will deny entry to the United States\u2019s deportation flights as Trump\u2019s immigration plans begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe US cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,\u201d Petro posted Sunday on X<\/u><\/a>. \u201cI deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South American country will send its presidential plane to Honduras to pick up Colombians after the country refused to accept migrant deportation flights from the United States, Petro said Sunday<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis measure is in response to the government\u2019s commitment to guarantee dignified conditions. In no way have Colombians, as patriots and subjects of rights, been or will be banished from Colombian territory,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newly confirmed<\/u><\/a> secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2002<\/u><\/a>said in a statement<\/u><\/a> that Petro had authorized the two flights but canceled his authorization when the planes were in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs demonstrated by today\u2019s actions, we are unwavering in our commitment to end illegal immigration and bolster America\u2019s border security,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petro responded to Rubio in a post saying that he would never allow Colombians to be brought in handcuffs on flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMarco, if officials from the Foreign Ministry allowed this, it would never be under my direction. \u2026 I am a man of freedom, not of chains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), in a Sunday afternoon post on X<\/u><\/a>, said that Colombia and all nations \u201cshould be on notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCongress is fully prepared to pass sanctions and other measures against those that do not fully cooperate or follow through on requirements to accept their citizens who are illegally in the United States,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
