{"id":37168,"date":"2025-01-13T18:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-14T00:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=37168"},"modified":"2025-01-13T20:29:39","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T02:29:39","slug":"metas-fact-checking-changes-stoke-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=37168","title":{"rendered":"Meta\u2019s fact-checking changes stoke concerns \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The end of fact-checking at Meta is raising fresh concerns its platforms will become a&nbsp;hotbed of disinformation&nbsp;as the network hands over the policing of content to users. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The move, coupled with the loosening of some hate speech rules, was&nbsp;slammed by some tech policy experts as a&nbsp;<strong>180-degree shift<\/strong>&nbsp;for Meta that could undo nearly a decade of efforts to prevent disinformation from spreading on its platforms \u2014 Facebook, Instagram and Threads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">While Meta CEO<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mark-zuckerberg\/\"><u>Mark Zuckerberg\u2002<\/u><\/a>framed the decision as a return to the company\u2019s \u201croots\u201d in an embrace of free speech, some observers worry today\u2019s political and digital climate leaves too much room for false information to spread online.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou get rid of the fact-checkers and people that are sort of policing the content \u2026 that [could] be a turbo-charged engine for disinformation,\u201d Ari Lightman, a digital media professor at Carnegie Mellon University, told The Hill.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisinformation is very sensational in terms of its orientation. It\u2019s designed to draw people in, it\u2019s designed to be confrontational,\u201d he said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The fact-checking program was&nbsp;<strong>created in 2016<\/strong>&nbsp;amid mounting scrutiny after it was revealed Russia attempted to use Facebook to influence the U.S. election that year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the years that followed, the platform&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/03\/how-were-tackling-misinformation-across-our-apps\/?email=467cb6399cb7df64551775e431052b43a775c749&amp;emaila=12a6d4d069cd56cfddaa391c24eb7042&amp;emailb=054528e7403871c79f668e49dd3c44b1ec00c7f611bf9388f76bb2324d6ca5f3&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=01.13.25 Tech SL\"><u>repeatedly boosted<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the program, with&nbsp;more than<strong>&nbsp;80 independent fact-checkers. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The fact-checkers, however,<strong>&nbsp;did not monitor or judge the speech<\/strong>&nbsp;of elected officials on its platforms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Zuckerberg appears to be changing his tune on Trump, a longtime critic of social media companies for&nbsp;what he believes is&nbsp;<strong>censorship<\/strong>&nbsp;of his views.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFour years ago this week, Facebook banned Donald Trump for inciting a violent insurrection that resulted in the deaths of five people and disrupted our democracy,\u201d Nicole Gill, the co-founder and executive director of tech advocacy group&nbsp;<strong>Accountable Tech,&nbsp;<\/strong>said of the announcement last week. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, Zuckerberg is reopening the floodgates to the exact same surge of hate, disinformation, and conspiracy theories that caused January 6th \u2014 and that continue to spur real-world violence,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The fact-checking system will be replaced by user-generated \u201ccommunity notes,\u201d reminiscent of the feature used on<strong>&nbsp;Elon Musk\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;X platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Musk, for his part, has faced criticism for X\u2019s reliance on community notes.
