She didn\u2019t mind. The 60-year-old said she feels compassion for people in health care.<br \/>\n\u201cThey definitely need a break,\u201d said Cohrs, who was working at an assisted living facility when COVID-19 hit.<br \/>\nA rush of vaccines, virus tests and a busy flu season started overwhelming pharmacies more than a year ago, forcing many to temporarily close when workers weren\u2019t available.<br \/>\nMajor drugstore chains have raised pay and dangled signing bonuses to add employees. They\u2019re also emphasizing the lunch breaks and sending routine prescription work to other locations to improve conditions in their pandemic-battered pharmacies.<br \/>\nStill, temporary closures persist, and experts say bigger changes are needed.<br \/>\n\u201cThere isn\u2019t a shortage of pharmacists. There\u2019s just a shortage of pharmacists who want to work in those high-stress environments that aren\u2019t adequately resourced,\u201d said Richard Dang, an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of Southern California.<br \/>\nDrugstores rely on pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to fill prescriptions, answer phones, work the drive-thru window, administer vaccines and give tests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-business-medication-covid-pandemics-7aa39f8227449cc3b4e1bd2d3b130716\">Apnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joan Cohrs missed her chance to grab a prescription at her usual drugstore by about 30 seconds.
