Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2002<\/u><\/a>(I-Vt.) is doubling down on his attacks against tech billionaire Elon Musk\u2002<\/u><\/a>over H-1B visas, telling him he\u2019s \u201cdead wrong\u201d about the employment visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an op-ed published Wednesday<\/u><\/a> on Fox News, Sanders highlighted the ongoing debate about H-1B visas<\/u><\/a> and other guest worker programs as President-elect Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>prepares to implement his immigration plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The H-1B visa is a temporary, non-immigrant work permit that\u2019s become part of the political debate.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some say the visa attracts professional talent to the U.S., and others say the program allows employers to hire outside the country and pay workers less than they would if they hired an American citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musk, who was tapped to co-lead Trump\u2019s \u201cDepartment of Government Efficiency,\u201d has defended the visa program, arguing companies can hire workers they need that they can\u2019t find in the country. Musk\u2019s social platform X lashed out against opponents<\/u><\/a> in the debate and Trump came out in support of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his op-ed, Sanders highlighted the ongoing debate about the work program and Musk\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBillionaires like Elon Musk claim it is crucial to our economy, arguing that the United States faces a shortage of highly skilled engineers and technology professionals,\u201d Sanders wrote. \u201cThey are dead wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sander said that H-1B visas are not intended to employ the \u201cbest and brightest\u201d but instead replace American workers with people who can be paid lower wages and people who \u201coften live as indentured servants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cheaper it is to hire guest workers, the more money the multi-billionaire owners or large corporations make,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that the program hurts American workers and can also threaten the livelihoods of H-1B visa holders who complain about unfair work conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf there is truly a major shortage of skilled tech workers in this country, why did Tesla lay-off over 7,500 American workers last year \u2013 including many software developers and engineers at its factory in Austin, Texas \u2013 while applying to hire thousands of H-1B guest workers?\u201d Sanders wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not the first time<\/u><\/a> Sanders slammed Musk over the matter. In a statement last week, Sanders wrote on X that Musk was wrong about the visa program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
