{"id":36928,"date":"2025-01-07T15:09:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T21:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36928"},"modified":"2025-01-07T21:11:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T03:11:16","slug":"washington-post-to-lay-off-4-of-staff-to-cut-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36928","title":{"rendered":"Washington Post to lay off 4% of staff to cut costs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jan 7 (Reuters) &#8211; The Washington Post said on Tuesday it would lay off about 4% of its workforce or less than 100 employees in a bid to cut costs, as the storied newspaper grapples with growing losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The newspaper is making changes across several business functions, a spokesperson said, while suggesting the job cuts will not impact its newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The newspaper, owned by Amazon.com&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/AMZN.O\"><u>(AMZN.O), opens new tab<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;founder Jeff Bezos, is among many news outlets struggling to maintain a sustainable business model in the decades since the internet upended the economics of journalism and caused a sharp decline in digital advertising rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Post has seen a decline its digital readership and reported a $77 million loss in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The Washington Post is continuing its transformation to meet the needs of the industry, build a more sustainable future and reach audiences where they are,&#8221; the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2023, executives at The Post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/uk-journalist-winnett-will-not-join-washington-post-editor-says-post-2024-06-21\/\"><u>offered voluntary buyouts<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;across the company to reduce employee headcount by about 10% and shrink the size of the newsroom to about 940 journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Associated Press also said in November it would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/associated-press-lay-off-8-staff-2024-11-18\/\"><u>lay off about 8%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of its workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Post, which appointed William Lewis as its CEO in early 2024, had decided not to endorse a candidate in the November U.S. presidential election, leading to more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/over-200000-subscribers-flee-washington-post-after-it-blocks-harris-endorsement-2024-10-28\/\"><u>200,000 people canceling<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;their digital subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Bezos defended the move not to issue an endorsement, saying in an opinion piece in the paper that &#8220;most people believe the media is biased&#8221;, and the Post and other newspapers need to boost their credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/washington-post-lay-off-4-staff-cut-costs-2025-01-07\/\">reuters<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan 7 (Reuters) &#8211; The Washington Post said on Tuesday it would lay off about 4% of its workforce or less than 100 employees in a bid to cut costs, as the storied newspaper grapples with growing losses.
