{"id":36590,"date":"2024-12-30T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-30T22:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36590"},"modified":"2024-12-30T22:30:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-31T04:30:19","slug":"russia-rejects-trumps-ukraine-peace-proposals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36590","title":{"rendered":"Russia rejects Trump\u2019s Ukraine peace proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Russian Foreign Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/sergey-lavrov\/\"><u>Sergey Lavrov\u2002<\/u><\/a>rejected proposals Monday floated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President-elect Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>allies to end the war in Ukraine, dealing a major setback for the incoming president\u2019s hopes to freeze the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mid.ru\/en\/press_service\/photos\/meropriyatiya_s_uchastiem_ministra\/1989723\/\"><u>interview with Russian state-run media<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;outlet TASS, Lavrov said Moscow has \u201cnot received any official signals regarding a settlement in Ukraine\u201d but the Kremlin was resistant to those unofficial ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not happy, of course, with the proposals made by members of the Trump team to postpone Ukraine\u2019s admission to NATO for 20 years and to station British and European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine,\u201d he said, responding to leaked reports of Trump\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lavrov called for \u201creliable and legally binding agreements that would eliminate the root causes of the conflict and seal a mechanism precluding the possibility of their violation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has not officially released any proposals to end the war, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/5042314-trump-says-russia-ukraine-peace-may-be-harder-than-middle-east\/\"><u>earlier this month he admitted<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;it would be more difficult to solve than the Middle East conflict. Still, Trump campaigned on ending the war by the time he takes office and has also claimed he could end it within 24 hours of his taking office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7201565\/person-of-the-year-2024-donald-trump-transcript\/\"><u>Time magazine interview<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;this month, Trump said he would not release his proposal because it would become \u201ca worthless plan\u201d once made public. But he pledged he would not abandon Ukraine amid fears he would give up eastern Ukrainian territory seized by Russian forces in the war without finding a solution that would protect Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to reach an agreement, and the only way you\u2019re going to reach an agreement is not to abandon,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">His advisers, including retired Lt. Gen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/keith-kellogg\/\"><u>Keith Kellogg,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;whom Trump tapped for his special envoy to Ukraine, have proposed pushing Ukraine to the table by threatening to cut off aid and getting Russian President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/vladimir-putin\/\"><u>Vladimir Putin\u2002<\/u><\/a>to negotiate with the threat of surging weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Solutions to end the war reportedly include abandoning NATO membership aspirations for Ukraine and supporting a European peacekeeping force in return for security guarantees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ukrainian President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/volodymyr-zelensky\/\"><u>Volodymyr Zelensky\u2002<\/u><\/a>has made NATO membership a key part of his victory plan, and Ukrainian officials have pushed for legitimate security guarantees, which is unlikely to happen outside of NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lavrov said Russia \u201cwould refuse to accept Ukraine\u2019s NATO membership regardless of the territorial factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Putin, who has called for a \u201clasting peace\u201d and has accused Ukraine of thwarting efforts to end the war,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/5048415-russian-president-putin-war-ukraine\/\"><u>said he is open to meeting with Trump<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But Lavrov said Monday he doubted Trump could restore ties between Russia and the U.S., arguing it would \u201cnot be that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if Trump tries to relaunch bilateral ties, he will have to swim against the stream, considering the current bipartisan consensus on the policy of deterring Russia,\u201d Lavrov said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens next. If the Americans respect our interests, our dialogue will be gradually renewed.
