{"id":36268,"date":"2024-12-23T17:22:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T23:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36268"},"modified":"2024-12-23T21:17:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-24T03:17:05","slug":"us-starbucks-workers-strike-expands-to-11-states-as-christmas-approaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=36268","title":{"rendered":"US Starbucks workers\u2019 strike expands to 11 states as Christmas approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Walkouts have caused nearly 50 stores nationwide to close in five days, says Starbucks Workers United union<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/dec\/20\/starbucks-strike-hundreds-stores-christmas-eve\">five-day strike from the Starbucks workers\u2019 union<\/a>&nbsp;has grown to include locations in at least 11 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As of Sunday, the strike had caused \u201calmost 50 stores nationwide\u201d to close after it began, according to a statement provided by the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The strike started with baristas walking off the job in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle on Friday. It has since expanded into Denver; Columbus, Ohio; and Philadelphia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Other locations are: New York City; Boston; Texas\u2019s Dallas-Forth Worth area; and Portland, Oregon, according to a written statement provided by the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWalkouts are expected to continue surging through Christmas Eve,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/starbucks\">Starbucks<\/a>&nbsp;Workers United said. \u201cThe final days before Christmas are traditionally one of Starbucks\u2019 busiest customer traffic times of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The union told CNN that the strike could reach \u201chundreds\u201d of stores by Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement provided to the Guardian, a Starbucks spokesperson, Phil Gee, said: \u201cThe few disruptions we have experienced this week have had no significant impact to our store operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly a small handful of our US stores have been impacted,\u201d Gee said. \u201cWe respect our partners\u2019 right to engage in lawful strike activity, and we appreciate the thousands of partners across the country who are continuing to support each other and deliver the Starbucks experience for our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Starbucks operates with more than 200,000 employees at more than 10,000 stores, according to CNN. Starbucks Workers United represents more than 10,500 workers at more than 500 stores, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"#stores\">their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement on X, the union wrote on Thursday: \u201cStarbucks baristas are going on five days of escalating [unfair labor practice] strikes in response to the company backtracking on our promised path forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The union wrote that it hoped to reach an agreement on contract negotiations before the new year \u2013 but said that Starbucks management had \u201cyet to present workers with a serious economic proposal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The union added: \u201cStarbucks proposed no immediate wage increase for union baristas, and a guarantee of only 1.5% wage increases in future years,\u201d the union added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lynn Fox, the president of Starbucks Workers United, said in a written statement: \u201cWe were ready to bring the foundational framework home this year, but Starbucks wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter all Starbucks has said about how they value partners throughout the system, we refuse to accept zero immediate investment in baristas\u2019 wages and no resolution of the hundreds of outstanding unfair labor practices,\u201d Fox said. \u201cUnion baristas know their value, and they\u2019re not going to accept a proposal that doesn\u2019t treat them as true partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In his written statement to the Guardian, Gee said: \u201cWorkers United delegates prematurely ended our bargaining session this week. It is disappointing they didn\u2019t return to the table given the progress we\u2019ve made to date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But the Starbucks spokesperson said that proposals from the union and received by management \u201ccall for an immediate increase in the minimum wage of hourly partners by 64% and by 77% over the life of a three-year contract\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not sustainable,\u201d Gee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, Gee also said: \u201cWe are ready to continue negotiations to reach agreements. We need the union to return to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Starbucks Workers United issued a statement on behalf of Fatmeh Alhadjaboodi, a bargaining delegate and five-year barista, saying: \u201cNobody wants to strike.
