Rep. Gerry Connolly\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Va.) took aim at FBI Director Christopher Wray,<\/u><\/a> who announced his intent to step down<\/u><\/a> from the role ahead of President-Trump\u2019s apparent plans to fire him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI, maybe, you know, Director Wray is right that by removing himself, he removes a target, but he\u2019s going to be replaced with a partisan hack who has no real experience with the FBI, or for that matter law enforcement writ large,\u201d Connolly told CNN\u2019s Dana Bash,<\/u><\/a> who had said that Wray\u2019s resignation may signal that the FBI director role is \u201cpolitical\u201d \u2014 that as one president leaves, a new leader for the position is chosen. Though, she noted, \u201cthat\u2019s not the case,\u201d since directors traditionally serve a 10-year term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump nominated Kash Patel\u2002<\/u><\/a>to lead the FBI<\/u><\/a>, suggesting he plans to remove Wray, whom Trump nominated to a 10-year term in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I think for the rank-and-file FBI, I think his decision to resign prematurely under pressure is tantamount to abandonment, abandonment of the FBI and abandonment of them and their protections, exposing them to a political purge,\u201d he added, as highlighted by Mediaite<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wray in a town hall meeting earlier this week said he would finish out his term until the end of Biden\u2019s administration in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy goal is to keep the focus on\u202four mission \u2014 the indispensable work you\u2019re doing on behalf of the American people every day. In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work,\u201d Wray said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump celebrated Wray\u2019s announcement, labeling it a \u201cgreat day for America<\/u><\/a>\u201d and claiming it would lead to necessary changes at the bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice,\u201d Trump posted\u2002on Truth Social<\/u><\/a>. \u201cI just don\u2019t know what happened to him. We will now restore the Rule of Law for all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
