{"id":35698,"date":"2024-12-09T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T21:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35698"},"modified":"2024-12-09T20:45:34","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T02:45:34","slug":"who-is-luigi-mangione-person-of-interest-in-unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35698","title":{"rendered":"Who is Luigi Mangione, person of interest in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Luigi Mangione, 26, was apprehended by police on Monday in connection with the homicide of UnitedHealthcare CEO&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/12\/04\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-killed-shot\"><u>Brian Thompson<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The big picture:&nbsp;<\/strong>Thompson&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/12\/06\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-insurance\"><u>shooting on Wednesday<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;sparked a massive manhunt but no arrests had been made in connection to the case prior to Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Driving the news:&nbsp;<\/strong>Mangione is expected to face gun charges in New York and Pennsylvania, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said during Monday&#8217;s press briefing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He was detained at a McDonald&#8217;s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Altoona Police Department confirmed in a press release that Mangione was arrested on charges unrelated to Thompson&#8217;s shooting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mangione&#8217;s last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born and raised in Maryland and has ties to San Francisco.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mangione&#8217;s education and background<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mangione attended<\/strong>&nbsp;the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in May 2020 with both a bachelor&#8217;s degree and a master&#8217;s degree, a Penn spokesperson told Axios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He also received a Master of Science in Engineering in computer and information science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mangione graduated in 2016 as valedictorian<\/strong>&nbsp;of the Gilman School, a prep school in Maryland, multiple media outlets reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A LinkedIn account attributed to Mangione says he served as head counselor at a Stanford University pre-collegiate studies program in 2019. A Stanford spokesperson confirmed to Axios that &#8220;a person by the name of Luigi Mangione&#8221; had worked as head counselor for the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The LinkedIn account says that Mangione started work as a data engineer after graduating Penn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson for TrueCar, another company listed on Mangione&#8217;s LinkedIn account, said he has not been an employee of the vehicle sales business since 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the manhunt unfolded<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Context:&nbsp;<\/strong>Thompson was shot and killed outside of a midtown Manhattan Hilton at about 6:40am ET on Wednesday by a masked man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/twin-cities\/2024\/12\/05\/united-health-ceo-brian-thompson-murder-shocks-twin-cities\"><u>Thompson had<\/u><\/a>\u00a0received threats, his wife said, possibly related to health care coverage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Zoom in:&nbsp;<\/strong>A McDonald&#8217;s employee who recognized Mangione called local police, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Monday. Tisch said his behavior was suspicious during questioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mangione was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, a U.S. passport, a gun and a suppressor consistent with those used in the attack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A fraudulent New Jersey ID was consistent with one used to check into a New York City hostel ahead of the shooting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What they&#8217;re saying:&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8220;Officers recovered a handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset,&#8221; Tisch said.
