{"id":35460,"date":"2024-12-03T18:43:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T00:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35460"},"modified":"2024-12-03T21:51:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T03:51:14","slug":"top-us-house-democrat-calls-on-biden-to-pardon-working-class-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35460","title":{"rendered":"Top US House Democrat calls on Biden to pardon working-class Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) &#8211; The top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, on Tuesday called on President Joe Biden to pardon some working-class Americans after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/after-president-bidens-pardon-hunter-bidens-lawyer-files-dismiss-cases-2024-12-02\/\"><u>drawing criticism<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/what-is-legal-effect-president-bidens-pardon-his-son-hunter-2024-12-02\/\"><u>pardoning his own son<\/u><\/a>, Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;During his final weeks in office, President Biden should exercise the high level of compassion he has consistently demonstrated throughout his life, including toward his son, and pardon on a case-by-case basis the working-class Americans in the federal prison system whose lives have been ruined by unjustly aggressive prosecutions for nonviolent offenses,&#8221; Jeffries said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Biden, who leaves office on Jan. 20, for months had said he would not pardon his son, who was found guilty of lying about being addicted to illegal drugs while buying a gun and pleaded guilty to criminal charges of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes. The sweeping pardon also applied to any other crimes &#8220;he committed or may have committed&#8221; between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The president said he believed his son had been made the target of a politically motivated prosecution.
