{"id":35451,"date":"2024-12-03T13:33:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T19:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35451"},"modified":"2024-12-03T21:31:36","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T03:31:36","slug":"gop-governors-say-theyll-aid-in-trumps-mass-deportations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=35451","title":{"rendered":"GOP governors say they&#8217;ll aid in Trump&#8217;s mass deportations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">GOP leaders are<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>doubling down on their commitment to help President-elect Trump with a key \u2014 and controversial \u2014 component of his mass deportations plan: cooperation from local and state authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong>&nbsp;The federal government doesn&#8217;t have enough resources to carry out mass deportations \u2014 the country has an estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/07\/22\/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us\/\"><u>11 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;undocumented immigrants \u2014 without local police being involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Context:<\/strong>&nbsp;Some local governments have long collaborated with federal immigration authorities, usually via &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/identify-and-arrest\/detainers\"><u>detainers<\/u><\/a>&#8221; \u2014 requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for local police to hold for an extended period immigrants who have been arrested on criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">ICE uses the detainers to give itself more time to determine whether the immigrants are deportable and, if so, to detain them while they&#8217;re still in local custody.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But critics say those collaborations create distrust between local police and immigrants who, because of the relationship with ICE, may be scared to cooperate with an investigation or report a crime to their local authorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>State of play:<\/strong>&nbsp;Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) last week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/governor.utah.gov\/uncategorized\/news-release-gov-cox-announces-state-effort-to-support-incoming-trump-administration-on-deporting-illegal-immigrants-who-have-committed-crimes-and-pose-a-threat-to-public-safety\/\"><u>announced<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a &#8220;targeted effort&#8221; to aid Trump&#8217;s deportation plans, Axios Salt Lake City reporter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/salt-lake-city\/2024\/11\/26\/utah-governor-cox-trump-mass-deportation-plan-immigrants\"><u>Kim Boj\u00f3rquez writes<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, which has the third-highest number of undocumented immigrants, said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/1861431272918102484\"><u>post on X<\/u><\/a>\u00a0last week that &#8220;states and localities should be required&#8221; to assist with deportations &#8220;as a condition of receiving federal funding.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Texas, which has the second-highest number of undocumented immigrants, has offered Trump the use of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/11\/19\/texas-border-starr-county-ranch-trump-deportation\/\"><u>1,400-acre ranch<\/u><\/a>\u00a0near the southern border for deportations. It also passed a law last year that would allow local police to arrest people suspected of crossing the border illegally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That law, which the U.S. says is unconstitutional because only the federal government can enforce immigration laws,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/29\/texas-immigration-border-law-lawsuit-ruling\"><u>is on hold<\/u><\/a>\u00a0while a lawsuit against it plays out in court.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The other side:<\/strong>&nbsp;Some Democratic governors and mayors say they won&#8217;t be cooperating with the feds on mass deportations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Denver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2024\/11\/25\/mike-johnston-trump-allies-immigration-deportation\"><u>Mayor Mike Johnston<\/u><\/a>\u00a0has pledged to protect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2024\/11\/14\/trump-colorado-immigration-deportations-courts-operation-aurora\"><u>undocumented immigrants<\/u><\/a>\u00a0from possible mass deportations under the incoming administration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In an interview this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/boston\/2024\/11\/21\/boston-mayor-wu-trump-czar-sanctuary-cities-homan\"><u>Boston Mayor Michelle Wu<\/u><\/a>\u00a0reiterated the city&#8217;s decade-old policy of refusing to help deport undocumented immigrants unless criminal warrants have been issued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Zoom in:&nbsp;<\/strong>Perhaps the biggest<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>rebellion comes from California, where the largest number of undocumented immigrants lives (1.8 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) earlier this month called a special legislative to session resist the incoming Trump administration, including on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc10.com\/article\/news\/local\/california\/calmatters\/california-trump-deportation-impact\/103-c47d7b01-56dd-4461-ba74-4ca138fda30c\"><u>immigration<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/los-angeles-city-council-unanimously-approves-sanctuary-ordinance\/15559165\/\"><u>\u2002Los Angeles City Council<\/u><\/a>\u00a0last week unanimously approved a &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; ordinance that bars city resources or personnel from being used to help federal immigration enforcement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Reality check:&nbsp;<\/strong>Mass deportations will be tough to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/11\/24\/immigration-court-backlog-wait-mass-deportations\"><u>pull off logistically,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;even with the aid of some states or cities. Immigrants are also<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>afforded due process by the nation&#8217;s immigration courts, which has a&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=A backlog of nearly 4 million immigration cases and a shortage of immigration judges and detention centers can hinder quick deportation.\"><u>backlog of 3.7 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The government will need to house detained immigrants before they are deported, and there aren&#8217;t currently enough facilities to do that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The feds already have some partnerships with local jails and state prisons to house immigrants who are in non-criminal detention, and the Trump administration could expand that use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What to watch:<\/strong>&nbsp;Some cities with significant immigrant populations are waiting to take a stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Columbus, Ohio, recently created a<a href=\"https:\/\/columbus.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6884378&amp;GUID=B7933661-509D-4AFD-92AE-B41F86BEEBBC&amp;Options=ID|Text|&amp;Search=2517-2024&amp;FullText=1\"><u>\u2002commission<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to report on issues that concern immigrants, but does not consider itself a sanctuary city and will not answer questions about deportations until the commission is seated, per city spokesperson Nya Hairston.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abc6onyourside.com\/news\/local\/columbus-mayor-andrew-ginther-200k-new-homes-dismisses-donald-trump-mass-deportation-plan\"><u>Mayor Andrew Ginther<\/u><\/a>\u00a0said at a press conference earlier this month that he didn&#8217;t run to be &#8220;anti-Trump.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ginther, who also serves as the president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmayors.org\/the-conference\/leadership\/\"><u>U.S. Conference of Mayors<\/u><\/a>, said mayors are &#8220;not interested in a war with the Trump administration.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/12\/03\/trump-mass-deportations-republican-florida-texas-utah\">axios<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOP leaders are&nbsp;doubling down on their commitment to help President-elect Trump with a key \u2014 and controversial \u2014 component of his mass deportations plan: cooperation from local and state authorities.
