John Kelly, who w<\/a>as White House chief of staff<\/a> during the Trump administration, said in a series of recent interviews that former President Donald Trump meets the definition of a fascist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remark, published Tuesday, was made in one of Kelly’s interviews with The New York Times<\/a>. Audio of his comments was made available online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCertainly the former president is in the far-right area, he\u2019s certainly an authoritarian, admires people who are dictators \u2014 he has said that. So he certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure,” Kelly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly, who first joined the Trump administration as homeland security secretary and later was White House chief of staff from July 2017 until early 2019, also said Trump had spoken positively about Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe commented more than once that, you know, that Hitler did some good things, too,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement that Kelly \u201ctotally beclowned himself\u201d by recounting \u201cdebunked stories\u201d about the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump has always honored the service and sacrifice of all of our military men and women,\u201d Cheung said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Atlantic reported\u2002<\/a>earlier Tuesday that Trump had privately admired Hitler’s generals “who were totally loyal to him” and followed orders, privately saying in a conversation at the White House, \u201cI need the kind of generals that Hitler had.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is absolutely false,\u201d Trump spokesperson Alex Pfeiffer wrote in an email, The Atlantic reported. \u201cPresident Trump never said this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelly told NBC News<\/a> in 2022 that when Trump complained about U.S. generals, he would tell Trump that their foremost loyalty was to the Constitution and the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More recently, Democrats have likened<\/a> some of Trump’s rhetoric to Hitler’s. In December, Trump sparked backlash with a remark he made at a rally in New Hampshire in which he said immigrants were \u201cpoisoning the blood of our country.\u201d Hitler used the term \u201cblood poisoning\u201d in his manifesto, \u201cMein Kampf,\u201d to denigrate immigration and the mixing of races. Trump has denied reading the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, referred to The Atlantic\u2019s reporting on Trump\u2019s admiration of Hitler\u2019s generals at a campaign rally in Racine, Wisconsin, on Tuesday night, saying, \u201cThat makes me sick as hell, and it should make you sick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
