Jeremy Strong<\/a> recently\u2002told the Los Angeles Times<\/a> that \u201cit\u2019s absolutely valid\u201d to criticize straight actors for playing gay characters, although he also strongly believes that it\u2019s an actor\u2019s job \u201cto render something that is not necessarily your native habitat.\u201d Strong stars as Donald Trump\u2019s mentor Roy Cohn in \u201cThe Apprentice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, it\u2019s absolutely valid,\u201d Strong said about the criticism. \u201cI\u2019m sort of old fashioned, maybe, in the belief that, fundamentally, it\u2019s [about] a person\u2019s artistry, and that great artists, historically, have been able to, as it were, change the stamp of their nature. That\u2019s your job as an actor. The task, in a way, is to render something that is not necessarily your native habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s necessary [for gay roles to be played by gay performers], I think that it would be good if that were given more weight,\u201d Strong added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate over whether or not straight actors should play gay roles has been a consistent one in Hollywood over the last few years. Nicholas Galitzine made headlines over the summer\u2002<\/a>when he told British GQ\u2002<\/a>that he felt \u201csomewhat guilty\u201d as a straight actor when he decided to play gay roles in \u201cRed, White & Royal Blue\u201d and \u201cGeorge & Mary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,\u201d Galitzine told the publication. \u201cI felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I\u2019m taking up someone\u2019s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanley Tucci, who played gay roles in \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d (2006) and \u201cSupernova\u201d (2020), appeared on BBC Radio 4\u2019s \u201cDesert Island Discs\u201d show<\/a> last year and said it\u2019s \u201cfine\u201d for performers to play different sexualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am always very flattered when gay men come up to me and talk to me about \u2018The Devil Wears Prada\u2019 or they talk about \u2018Supernova,\u2019 and they say that, \u2018It was just so beautiful,\u2019 you know, \u2018You did it the right way.\u2019 Because often, it\u2019s not done the right way,\u201d Tucci said. \u201cAn actor is an actor is an actor. You\u2019re supposed to play different people. You just are. That\u2019s the whole point of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
