Abroad: Artificial intelligence is \u201caccelerating\u201d malign influence operations by U.S. adversaries like China, Iran and Russia before Election Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Those are two sobering warnings Decision Points received from Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco in an exclusive interview focused on the current climate of political threats in America and foreign efforts to spread chaos heading into the last stretch of the 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are facing an unprecedented level of, and increase in, threats of violence against public officials,\u201d Monaco says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You have of course heard about the most high-profile recent threats: the two apparent assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump, first in Butler, Pennsylvania, and then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/23\/us\/politics\/trump-assassination-attempt-routh-hearing.html\">at a golf course he owns in Florida<\/a>, barely two months apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There\u2019s also been the brutal assault of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/david-depape-man-attacked-paul-pelosi-hammer-sentenced-30-years-prison-rcna152614\">Paul Pelosi<\/a>, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s husband, and an alleged attempt on the life of Supreme Court Justice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/maryland\/articles\/2024-08-20\/trial-date-set-for-june-for-man-accused-of-trying-to-assassinate-supreme-court-justice-kavanaugh\">Brett Kavanaugh<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/james-hodgkinson-shooting-republicans-baseball-game\">the shooting at a congressional baseball practice<\/a>\u00a0that nearly claimed the life of House Republican Whip Steve Scalise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Presidents to Poll Workers<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But one thing that\u2019s so striking about political threats in 2024 America is how they target officials at every level \u2013 from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-wdtn\/pr\/man-charged-threats-against-president-vice-president-and-former-president\">senior elected officials<\/a>&nbsp;all the way down to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/section\/campaign-of-fear\/\">election workers<\/a>, who are often temporary hires or volunteers performing basic but vital tasks to get people into the voting booth or get ballots counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of the threats against election workers can be attributed to conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was rigged,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/12\/15\/1219048410\/giuliani-defamation-trial-money-georgia-election-workers\">a regular refrain from Trump and some of his allies<\/a>. Those lies also fueled the Jan. 6, 2021, riot in which supporters of the former president ransacked the Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump and Republicans have blamed Democrats\u2019 claim that the former president poses a threat to American democracy for the attempts on his life. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2024-09-23\/trump-attempted-assassination-suspect-ryan-routh-to-appear-in-court\">man arrested in the Florida incident<\/a>&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/us\/articles\/2024-09-16\/man-accused-of-trying-to-kill-trump-wrote-a-book-urging-iran-to-assassinate-the-ex-president\">echoed the \u201cdemocracy\u201d talking point on social media<\/a>, and was also apparently exercised about the war in Ukraine and Trump ending the Iran nuclear deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco speaks during a meeting of the Justice Department&#8217;s Election Threats Task Force on Sept. 4 in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Monaco, who played a central role in launching the Justice Department\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"#ettf\">Election Threats Task Force<\/a>&nbsp;in 2021, tells Decision Points about receiving frequent and worrisome reports from U.S. attorneys from all around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIncreasingly, what I&#8217;m seeing is that these are reports of threats of violence, and sometimes actual violence against public officials, including law enforcement agents, judges, prosecutors and, unfortunately, against election workers,\u201d she says.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of those election workers report \u201cfeeling quite intimidated, understandably, about taking on this work,\u201d Monaco says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">U.S. News recently published an opinion piece by Nevada\u2019s Democratic secretary of state, Francisco Aguilar, and his Republican counterpart in Georgia, Brad Raffensperger, pleading with Americans to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/opinion\/articles\/2024-09-03\/secretaries-of-state-we-want-you-to-be-an-election-poll-worker\">serve as poll workers<\/a>&nbsp;and help fill a staffing shortfall they described as being in the tens of thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a nod to concerns about safety, they cited efforts to beef up security at voting places and to punish those who harass or threaten poll workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These kinds of threats are a real-world concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2021, the nonprofit Brennan Center reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/one-three-election-officials-report-feeling-unsafe-because-their-job\">1 in 3 election officials<\/a>\u00a0felt unsafe because of their jobs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Princeton University\u2019s Bridging Divides Initiative found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bridgingdivides.princeton.edu\/updates\/2024\/threats-and-harassment-against-local-officials-spiked-july-new-data-shows\">threats and harassment against local officials spiked in July<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The BDI found threat and harassment events were \u201cup 30% compared to the first seven months of 2023, and 87% compared to the same time period in 2022.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Foreign Election AI-nterference<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Recently, the Justice Department has made high-profile announcements about disrupting foreign malign influence operations, including two Russia-linked schemes \u2013 one of which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/2024-09-04\/right-wing-influencers-were-duped-to-work-for-covert-russian-influence-operation-us-says\">co-opted conservative American commentators<\/a>, another designed \u201c<a href=\"#:~:text=The Justice Department today announced,laundering and criminal trademark laws.\">to covertly promote AI-generated false narratives on social media.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I asked Monaco: How is AI changing the foreign election interference game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think what it&#8217;s doing is accelerating and providing even more fuel for our foreign adversaries,\u201d who are using that advanced tech \u201cto sow discord, to sow distrust, to undermine confidence in our democratic processes, often using our own free society against us,\u201d she says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In addition to the Russian operation listed above,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Politics\/U.S.-elections-2024\/China-Iran-tap-AI-to-influence-U.S.-election-experts-warn\">China and Iran<\/a>&nbsp;have turned to AI to target American audiences, Monaco says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Iran has used AI-generated content and fake personas to \u201csow discord, to sow distrust, and also \u2026 to use the Gaza conflict, almost like kerosene, to foment discord and distrust, and in some instances, to masquerade as U.S. activists, to promote protests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThis is an area,\u201d she says, \u201cwhere we&#8217;re seeing foreign adversaries conduct online influence campaigns and using AI to accelerate and exacerbate that challenge for us.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a
