{"id":32538,"date":"2024-09-22T09:18:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-22T14:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=32538"},"modified":"2024-09-22T22:24:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T03:24:52","slug":"qualcomm-reportedly-wants-to-buy-intel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=32538","title":{"rendered":"Qualcomm reportedly wants to buy Intel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Qualcomm has informally approached Intel about a takeover, in what would be the largest tech merger of all time, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/deals\/qualcomm-approached-intel-about-a-takeover-in-recent-days-fa114f9d\"><u>multiple<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/qualcomm-approached-intel-about-takeover-recent-days-wsj-reports-2024-09-20\/\"><u>reports<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Why its matters:&nbsp;<\/strong>This could reshape the U.S. tech industry, and become the next president&#8217;s first major antitrust case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It also reflects the rapid fall from grace for Intel, which once was the world&#8217;s largest chipmaker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>By the numbers:<\/strong>&nbsp;Intel&#8217;s stock price has fallen by 36% over the past year, even including a small boost on Friday from the Qualcomm news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Its current market cap is around $93 billion, whereas Qualcomm is valued at around $188 billion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The largest tech merger to date was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/10\/13\/microsoft-activision-deal-closes\"><u>Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for $69 billion. There also was Broadcom&#8217;s $117 billion bid for Qualcomm in 2017, but that deal was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2018\/03\/13\/the-fallout-from-qualcomms-victory-1520950179\"><u>blocked by former President Trump<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on national security grounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The big picture:&nbsp;<\/strong>Intel&#8217;s troubles began before the rise of generative AI, but it didn&#8217;t recognize how the market was about to change \u2014 namely in favor of the types of chips made by rival Nvidia, which now is worth $2.85&nbsp;trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Intel also is a major recipient of capital commitments from the CHIPS Act, which is aimed at increasing domestic chipmaking capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Zoom out:<\/strong>&nbsp;San Diego-based Qualcomm hasn&#8217;t yet made an official offer for Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, nor explained publicly how it would finance such a giant acquisition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There also are questions about strategic fit, given that Qualcomm has never operated a chipmaking fab, and if Intel would swallow its pride and accept, or if it would fight (much like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2017\/12\/15\/qualcomm-rejects-broadcoms-103-billion-offer-1513306875\"><u>Qualcomm did<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in the Broadcom situation).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But the biggest sticking point could be U.S. antitrust regulators, given the sheer size and strategic importance of both companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/09\/22\/qualcomm-intel-takeover-chips\">axios<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Qualcomm has informally approached Intel about a takeover, in what would be the largest tech merger of all time, according to&nbsp;multiple&nbsp;reports.
