Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump<\/a> said Tuesday that he will meet Indian Prime Minister Nare<\/a>ndra Modi<\/a> next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at his first public appearance following Sunday\u2019s apparent assassination attempt<\/a>, Trump said Modi is \u201cfantastic\u201d but also called India<\/a> a \u201cvery big abuser\u201d as he criticized several countries for their trade policies with the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo when India, which is a very big abuser \u2014 he happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he\u2019s fantastic. I mean, fantastic, man,\u201d Trump said at at town hall in Flint, Michigan. \u201cThese, a lot of these leaders are fantastic … You know the expression, they\u2019re at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump did not provide further details on the meeting. The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As president, Trump visited India in 2020<\/a>, vowing to boost trade ties between the two countries. The U.S. is currently India\u2019s second-largest trading partner, behind China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23, and will partake in the fourth Quad Leaders\u2019 Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by President Joe Biden<\/a>. The Indian prime minister is also slated to attend and speak<\/a> before the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be Modi\u2019s first visit to the U.S. since he won a historic third term<\/a> in office in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Modi\u2019s state visit to Washington<\/a> in June 2023, the U.S. and India signed a slew of technology and defense deals<\/a> signaling a new era of bilateral relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, cooperation between the two countries has deepened. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of State announced it will partner\u2002with the\u2002India Semiconductor Mission<\/a> and India\u2019s electronics and IT government body to improve the global semiconductor value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe United States and India are key partners in ensuring the global semiconductor supply chain keeps pace with the global digital transformation currently underway. This collaboration between the United States and India underscores the potential to expand India\u2019s semiconductor industry to the benefit of both nations,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
