{"id":31344,"date":"2024-08-25T03:34:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-25T08:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=31344"},"modified":"2024-08-25T03:48:17","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T08:48:17","slug":"dozens-of-colleges-see-financial-aid-turmoil-impacting-freshman-class-makeups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=31344","title":{"rendered":"Dozens of colleges see financial aid turmoil impacting freshman class makeups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process will be fixed after a botched overhaul led some colleges to say they were seeing decreased enrollments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said he\u2019s \u201cvery confident\u201d households will be able to start applying for federal financial aid by Dec. 1, just weeks after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/us-department-education-announces-schedule-and-new-process-launch-2025-26-fafsa-form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">officials pushed back the launch date<\/a>&nbsp;for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by two months to Dec. 1 for the 2025-26 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We\u2019ve got to do better, and we\u2019re going to do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION MIGUEL CARDONA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The move aims to buy more time to test the online form with select students and schools after months of glitches and delays&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/education\/college-decision-day-passes-many-students-fafsa-delays-linger-rcna150025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roiled the college application process for millions of students<\/a>&nbsp;this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do better, and we\u2019re going to do better,\u201d Cardona told NBC News this week. Going forward, the application experience is \u201cgoing to be simpler \u2014 15, 20 minutes,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Already, fallout from the months of snags is showing up in enrollments, many higher-education officials say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">About three-quarters of the 384 private institutions that responded to a recent survey by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities said FAFSA issues altered the makeup of incoming freshman classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Forty-three percent said their first-year cohort is smaller than the prior one, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naicu.edu\/media\/5t0n1awq\/2024-fafsa-survey-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summary of findings<\/a>\u00a0NAICU released from the July leg of the survey, which it plans to continue conducting through September. The 850-school association told NBC News that 18% of respondents reported FAFSA problems have reduced the racial or ethnic diversity of freshman classes, and 27% said they logged fewer financial aid recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Education Department recognizes that this year\u2019s FAFSA rollout \u201chas been challenging for students, families, and postsecondary institutions,\u201d a spokesperson said in response to the findings, but added that the agency couldn\u2019t independently verify NAICU\u2019s unpublished data. \u201cThe Department won\u2019t rest until all eligible students get the help they need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The FAFSA difficulties have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/education\/college-decision-day-passes-many-students-fafsa-delays-linger-rcna150025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushed decision dates and aid offerings far past the traditional May 1 deadline<\/a>&nbsp;for many students. While most of the problems have been resolved, campus officials are worn out and say the new Dec. 1 date needs to hold at all costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s imperative the Department meet the delivery date with a flawless rollout and fully functional FAFSA. \u2018On or before December 1\u2019 must be on or before December 1,\u201d Mark Becker, president of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplu.org\/news-and-media\/news\/aplu-statement-on-delayed-2025-26-fafsa-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>&nbsp;this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I want to close up [the] Department of Education, move education back to the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The postponed launch also means most households won\u2019t be able to start their forms until weeks after a presidential election in which the fate of the Education Department itself is on the ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-push-dismantle-education-department-gets-momentum-house-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed dismantling<\/a>&nbsp;the agency, which evaluates students\u2019 eligibility for federal aid \u2014 a process many schools rely on to draw up their own offers \u2014 and disburses Pell grants to low-income undergrads and federal student loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI want to close up [the] Department of Education, move education back to the states,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=swa8oT4G95A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump told Elon Musk<\/a>&nbsp;this month in a conversation on X, the billionaire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/08\/trump-musk-crypto-harris-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GOP donor<\/a>\u2019s social media platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cardona declined to comment on the election but said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to continue fighting to make sure more students have access to higher education and that they\u2019re not paying debt for the rest of their lives, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cLast year, there were some challenges,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cWe\u2019ve learned from those.\u201d In the meantime, he urged applicants for the 2025-26 academic year to prepare by creating an FSA ID on<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>studentaid.gov so they can receive email updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In May, Cardona&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/education\/department-education-vows-full-scale-review-financial-aid-office-fafsa-rcna154705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced a \u201cfull-scale review\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;of the Federal Student Aid office that oversees FAFSA and promised \u201ctransformational changes\u201d at the division. As of this week, officials said they\u2019ve processed 14.2 million FAFSAs, with no remaining backlogs, and completions are down only 2.8% since last year \u2014 though the National College Attainment Network says that falloff is even greater,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncan.org\/page\/FAFSAtracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at nearly 10%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators praised the Education Department for listening to input from administrators and \u201ccommunicating fall timelines ahead of time.\u201d But Beth Maglione, the group\u2019s interim president and CEO, urged the government to get it right all at once for the following academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe fact that we are still, to this day, dealing with the aftershocks of this year\u2019s FAFSA rollout shows just how imperative it is that the process is thoroughly tested from end to end and launched as a system, not in a piecemeal manner,\u201d she said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasfaa.org\/nasfaa_statement_on_2025-26_fafsa_release_plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a statement<\/a>&nbsp;this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kristi Childs is preparing to fill out the FAFSA with her daughter, Hanalise Yarbrough, 17, who just started her senior year of high school in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Childs said she had trouble filling out the form last year for her two 19-year-old twins, Madison and Mason Yarbrough, both of whom are sophomores in college, although the latter is taking a semester off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI sure hope that they work the bugs out and have it ready to make it actually user-friendly and to have results quickly,\u201d Childs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hanalise is hoping to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College for two years before potentially transferring to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City but said she\u2019s \u201calways been kind of worried\u201d about financing college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t know much about the FAFSA. I\u2019ve taken a college and career readiness class from my high school, but it all sounded really confusing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hanalise is a flutist who\u2019s \u201cmainly riding on\u201d a potential band scholarship, but her mother said they will need federal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe still have dorms and books and meals and all of those things to make sure that we have covered,\u201d Childs said, adding that a smooth, timely FAFSA process is \u201cthe only way that our family is going to be able to afford to put another child in college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/education\/dozens-colleges-see-fafsa-turmoils-impact-freshman-classes-rcna167342\">nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process will be fixed after a botched overhaul led some colleges to say they were seeing decreased enrollments.
