Ohio Sen. JD Vance, former President Donald Trump\u2019s running mate, on Saturday said Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if a bill were to be passed by Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asked on NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d about GOP lawmakers like South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham who would want to see Trump advocate for and pass an abortion ban, Vance told moderator Kristen Welker that Trump has \u201cexplicitly\u201d said he would veto a ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI mean, if you\u2019re not supporting it, as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it,\u201d Vance argued.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n The latest position from the Trump campaign comes as the former president has changed his position<\/a> on abortion policy over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In April, Trump was asked on a tarmac in Atlanta about whether he would sign a national abortion ban if it passed through Congress and he simply answered \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the former president didn\u2019t clarify at the time what he considered a \u201cban.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2018, when he was president, Trump\u00a0called on the Senate to pass<\/a>\u00a0a 20-week limit on abortions that had already passed the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Last year, he celebrated the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate the constitutional right to abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAfter 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the \u2018shock\u2019 of everyone,\u201d Trump said<\/a> in a May 2023 social media post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
