{"id":31139,"date":"2024-08-20T03:44:51","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T08:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=31139"},"modified":"2024-08-20T03:45:48","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T08:45:48","slug":"more-pregnant-women-are-going-without-prenatal-care-cdc-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=31139","title":{"rendered":"More pregnant women are going without prenatal care, CDC finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The number of women going through pregnancy without&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/pregnancy-related-deaths-are-dropping-doctors-arent-satisfied-rcna149893\">prenatal care<\/a>&nbsp;is growing \u2014 even though the overall number of babies born in the U.S. is falling, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The lopsided trend,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db507.htm\">published Tuesday by the CDC\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics<\/a>, may reflect, in part, a growing number of women&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/states-strict-abortion-policies-simply-seeing-obgyn-regular-care-can-d-rcna162300\">unable to access OB\/GYN care<\/a>&nbsp;after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn many counties,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>you can\u2019t even find a prenatal care provider,\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>said Dr. Brenna Hughes, executive vice chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. \u201cIf you have limited resources and have to travel to be able to access prenatal care, it is going to be a deterrent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The percentage of mothers without any prenatal care rose from 2.2% in 2022 to 2.3% in 2023, the CDC\u2019s analysis of birth certificates found. Even that slight increase could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/womens-health\/states-pushing-abortion-bans-have-higher-infant-mortality-rates-n1008481\">detrimental to the health of both mom and baby<\/a>, said Dr. Kathryn Lindley, a cardio-obstetrician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of baby monitoring that goes on during pregnancy to help us identify any potential health problems,\u201d such as birth defects or unusually high blood pressure, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHigh blood pressure related to pregnancy can lead to serious illness or death by causing complications like strokes or seizures or heart attacks,\u201d Lindley said. \u201cIt\u2019s really important that all these things get identified and monitored to make sure that both the mom and the baby have a healthy outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Just under 3.6 million babies were born in the U.S. last year, down 2% from 2022, according to the CDC analysis. The decline resumes a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/u-s-birth-rate-falls-lowest-point-more-century-n1266349\">decadeslong fall in births<\/a>&nbsp;after a slight uptick during the early years of the Covid pandemic, which could have been due to lockdown among couples or a lack of access to contraception at pharmacies or doctors\u2019 offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The data,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/us-births-fell-last-year-marking-end-late-pandemic-rebound-experts-say-rcna149308\">previewed in April<\/a>, are considered final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The number of teenage girls giving birth fell, too. From 2022 to 2023, the birthrate among young women ages 15 to 19 declined 4%, from 13.6 to 13.1 births per 1,000 teen girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The rate for teenagers 15 to 17 years old seems to have plateaued, hovering around 5.6% since 2021. Still, experts are optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOverall this is positive,\u201d said Dr. Allison Bryant, associate chief health equity officer at Mass General Brigham and a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Mass General Hospital&nbsp;in Boston. \u201cI am cheered by the fact that for now, this seems to continue to fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/cdc-fewer-babies-born-2023-pregnant-women-missed-prenatal-care-rcna167149\">Nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of women going through pregnancy without&nbsp;prenatal care&nbsp;is growing \u2014 even though the overall number of babies born in the U.S. is falling, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
