{"id":3076,"date":"2023-01-02T02:26:57","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T08:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3076"},"modified":"2023-03-14T02:08:22","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T07:08:22","slug":"flu-and-rsv-on-the-decline-but-covid-hospitalizations-rise-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3076","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Flu and RSV on the decline but Covid hospitalizations rise<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Covid hospitalizations are rising in the United States, even as hospitalizations for\u00a0respiratory syncytial virus and\u00a0the flu\u2002continue to fall.<br \/>\nThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0reported\u00a0Friday that, while flu is still spreading at high levels, virus activity is falling in &#8220;most areas.&#8221; For the week ending Dec. 24, around 18,800 people were\u00a0hospitalized with flu, down from around 20,700 hospitalizations the week prior.<br \/>\nRSV hospitalization rates have fallen significantly since their\u00a0peak\u00a0in mid-November of 5.1 hospitalizations per 100,000 people. For the week ending Dec. 24, the\u00a0rate was 0.8 per 100,000.<br \/>\nAs of Thursday, data from the Department of Health and Human Services showed that pediatric hospital beds nationwide \u2014 which include children hospitalized with Covid, RSV or flu, among other illnesses \u2014 were 66% full, down from 69% a week ago.<br \/>\nEven so, infectious disease experts urge caution. The country just celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas and will soon celebrate New Year\u2019s, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee.<br \/>\n\u201cWe anticipate that flu at the very least is going to kick up after all this traveling and all of these holiday get-togethers,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe dip in flu activity could also be the result of a reporting lag over the holidays, Schaffner added.<br \/>\nSo far this season, at least 20 million people in the U.S. have been infected with flu, according to the CDC. About 13,000 have died. Of the samples reported to the agency, about 83% are the H3N2 strain of influenza A. The remaining are H1N1, another influenza A strain.
