{"id":30727,"date":"2024-08-10T01:47:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-10T06:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=30727"},"modified":"2024-08-10T03:16:24","modified_gmt":"2024-08-10T08:16:24","slug":"judge-in-trumps-election-interference-case-grants-extension-sought-by-special-counsel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=30727","title":{"rendered":"Judge in Trump&#8217;s election interference case grants extension sought by special counsel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump&#8217;s federal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/timeline-special-counsels-probe-trumps-efforts-overturn-2020\/story?id=101537003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election interference case<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday granted an extension requested by special counsel Jack Smith&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Smith on Thursday requested a delay in responding to a scheduling order from U.S District Judge Tanya Chutkan, citing issues related to the Supreme Court&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/supreme-court-rules-favor-jan-6-defendant-dispute\/story?id=111405443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent decision<\/a>\u00a0granting presidents immunity from prosecution for certain acts taken while in office.<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/judge-denies-trumps-effort-dismiss-dc-case-selective\/story?id=112547514\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Smith&#8217;s office said Thursday it continues &#8220;to assess the new precedent set forth last month&#8221; by the Supreme Court in tandem with &#8220;other Department of Justice components.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A status report on the case that was initially due Friday is now officially moved to Aug. 30. A status conference that had been scheduled for Aug. 16 will now be Sept. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Judge Chutkan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/judge-denies-trumps-effort-dismiss-dc-case-selective\/story?id=112547514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resumed control<\/a>&nbsp;of the case last Friday following the Supreme Court&#8217;s landmark ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Trump last August&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/live-updates\/trump-2020-election-indictment-charges\/?id=101943446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pleaded not guilty<\/a>&nbsp;to charges of undertaking a &#8220;criminal scheme&#8221; to overturn the results of the 2020 election by enlisting a slate of so-called &#8220;fake electors,&#8221; using the Justice Department to conduct &#8220;sham election crime investigations,&#8221; trying to enlist the vice president to &#8220;alter the election results,&#8221; and promoting false claims of a stolen election as the Jan. 6 riot raged &#8212; all in an effort to subvert democracy and remain in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/judge-trumps-election-interference-case-grants-extension-sought\/story?id=112717697\">abcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump&#8217;s federal&nbsp;election interference case&nbsp;on Friday granted an extension requested by special counsel Jack Smith&#8217;s office.
