Justice Neil Gorsuch responded to President Joe Biden\u2019s proposal for sweeping reforms<\/a> to the Supreme Court<\/a> in an interview that aired Sunday, telling Biden to \u201cbe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked by Fox News\u2019 Shannon Bream to respond to Biden\u2019s proposal, Gorsuch told her, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be surprised that I\u2019m not going to get into what is now a political issue during a presidential election year. I don\u2019t think that would be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the justice added that to Americans, the independent judiciary \u201cmeans that when you\u2019re unpopular, you can get a fair hearing under the law and under the Constitution. If you\u2019re in the majority, you don\u2019t need judges and juries to hear you and protect your rights. You\u2019re popular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judicial system is \u201cthere for the moments when, when the spotlight\u2019s on you, when the government\u2019s coming after you, and don\u2019t you want a ferociously independent judge and a jury of your peers to make those decisions?\u201d Gorsuch added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd so I just say, be careful,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Biden traveled to Texas, where he announced a set of proposed Supreme Court reforms that would impose mandatory ethics rules for the court and term limits on justices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposals aren\u2019t likely to be implemented before Biden\u2019s term ends, but they signal a policy goal for Democrats as several Supreme Court justices have come under increased scrutiny in the last few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, ProPublica reported on a series of expensive gifts and trips<\/a> Justice Clarence Thomas took with billionaire Harlan Crow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas\u2019 wife, Ginni Thomas, also faced scrutiny for her role in trying to overturn<\/a> Donald Trump\u2019s 2020 election loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And earlier this year, Justice Samuel Alito and his wife were at the center of controversy regarding a two flags flown at their homes: one \u201c<\/a>Appeal to Heaven<\/a>\u201d<\/a> flag<\/a> and one upside<\/a>–<\/a>down American flag<\/a>. Both are symbols used by Trump supporters and were flown during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alito has denied that the flags had anything to do with Trump, instead saying that the upside-down American flag was flown at his home during a dispute between his wife and their neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
