{"id":30392,"date":"2024-08-02T03:13:55","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T08:13:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=30392"},"modified":"2024-08-02T03:14:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T08:14:14","slug":"college-student-falls-to-his-death-at-the-grand-canyon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=30392","title":{"rendered":"College student falls to his death at the Grand Canyon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A college student visiting the Grand Canyon died after an accidental fall near a scenic overlook, park officials said Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, fell to his death Wednesday, roughly a quarter of a mile from Pipe Creek Overlook,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/places\/000\/pipe-creek-vista.htm\">the first vista along the park\u2019s South Entrance Road<\/a>, the National Park Service said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A report of a fall was called in at 10:40 a.m., the agency said. Rangers found Mejia\u2019s body 400 feet below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The park service said that it is investigating with the local medical examiner\u2019s office and that no additional details were immediately available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a statement, Indiana Bible College identified Mejia as a student at the Indianapolis school and said he was known for his warm smile and gentle spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHis absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him,\u201d the school said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/aboutus\/mortality-data.htm\">National Park Service data<\/a>, there were 205 fatal falls across the entire park system from 2014 to 2019, the most recent year for which data is available.
