{"id":3020,"date":"2023-01-01T04:49:57","date_gmt":"2023-01-01T10:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3020"},"modified":"2023-03-14T02:56:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T07:56:01","slug":"over-40-of-u-s-covid-cases-caused-by-omicron-subvariant-xbb-1-5-cd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=3020","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Over 40% of U.S. COVID cases caused by Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 &#8211; CD<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dec 30 (Reuters) &#8211; Over 40% of COVID-19 cases in the United States are now caused by the highly contagious Omicron XBB.1.5, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed on Friday, with the subvariant doubling from the previous week.<br \/>\nAlthough many public health experts are expressing concern about the rising COVID cases in China, infectious disease experts have been increasingly worried about the XBB.1.5 variant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ironically, probably the worst variant that the world is facing right now is actually XBB,&#8221; said Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, in a recent interview with Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Osterholm added that seven of the 10 U.S. states where cases and hospitalizations are rising are in the Northeast, concurrent with an increase of XBB\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__medium__1kbOh text__large__nEccO link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/covid-variant-xbb-accounts-more-than-18-us-cases-2022-12-23\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">cases there<\/a>, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">Recombinants of the BA.2 variant, XBB and XBB.1.5, together accounted for 44.1% of the total cases in the country for the week ended Dec. 31. For the week ended Dec.24, XBB.1.5 had made up 21.7% of the total cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">&#8220;Every previous two winters, we have seen a surge of infections that peaked in mid January&#8230; and I expect the same to happen this year,&#8221; said John Moore, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">He added that the difference between last two years and this year is that there has not been a significant increase in the death rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">The XBB variant has been driving up cases in parts of Asia, including Singapore. It accounted for 3.6% of the total cases in the U.S. this week compared with 4.2% in the previous week.
