Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) called Sen. JD Vance\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Ohio) a \u201cphony\u201d and a \u201cfake\u201d after the GOP vice presidential nominee criticized Democrats \u2013 in particular, Vice President Harris \u2013 for not publicly raising concerns about President Biden\u2019s mental capacity earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview on CNN\u2019s \u201cThe Source\u201d with Kaitlan Collins on Monday, Beshear responded to Vance\u2019s criticism by saying the senator was \u201cgrasping for straws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cListen, JD Vance is a phony. He\u2019s fake. I mean, he first says that Donald Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>is like Hitler, and now he\u2019s acting like he\u2019s Lincoln,\u201d Beshear said about Vance, referring to his reversal in support<\/u><\/a> for the president and his running mate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance began his career in the public eye by writing a best-selling memoir that was highly critical of Trump and his presidency. Vance had called himself a \u201cnever Trump guy\u201d and described Trump as an idiot and reprehensible. Behind closed doors, Vance reportedly compared Trump to Hitler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Senate, however, Vance has been one of Trump\u2019s staunchest supporters and a champion of the \u201cAmerica first\u201d mindset in his approach to policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean, the problem with JD Vance is he has no conviction, but I guess his running mate has 34,\u201d Beshear added, referring to Trump\u2019s conviction in New York on 34 counts<\/u><\/a> of falsifying business records in a conspiracy to shield potentially damaging information from the public ahead of the 2016 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beshear was responding to a clip from a rally earlier on Monday, when Vance criticized Democrats for only now speaking out against President Biden, who bowed out of the race on Sunday<\/u><\/a> but has said he has no intention to resign before then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not okay, ladies and gentlemen. You cannot, for three and a half years, take a guy who clearly didn\u2019t have the mental capacity to do the job,\u201d Vance said at a rally in Middletown, Ohio<\/u><\/a> on Monday \u2013 his first solo rally since joining the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKamala Harris\u2002<\/u><\/a>lied about it. My Senate Democratic colleagues lied about it. The media lied about it. Every single person who saw Joe Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>knew that he wasn\u2019t capable of doing the job, and for three years, they said nothing, until he became political dead weight,\u201d Vance continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before calling Vance a \u201cphony,\u201d Beshear pushed back on the way Vance referred to the vice president, the clear front-runner to replace Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, first, he ought to call the vice president by her title. She earned it. She is Vice President Harris,\u201d Beshear said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beshear, a popular Democratic governor in a deep-red state, has been mentioned among the candidates who could serve as Harris\u2019s hypothetical vice president if she wins the Democratic nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
