Alsu Kurmasheva has denied any wrongdoing during the trial that was conducted behind closed doors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kurmasheva has worked in the media outlet\u2019s Tatar-language service. She lived in Prague and occasionally traveled to Russia to visit her relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The editor was first detained in June 2023 in Kazan and charged with failing to notify the authorities about her dual Russian and American citizenship. She was fined 10,000 rubles ($112,8) for this offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Kurmasheva was detained again in October and charged with failing to register as a&nbsp;\u201cforeign agent.\u201d&nbsp;In December, she was additionally charged under Article 207 of the Russian Criminal Code, which bans the&nbsp;\u201cpublic dissemination of false information about the Russian Armed Forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to the news channel RBK, the prosecution argued that&nbsp;\u201cfalse information\u201d&nbsp;was found in Kurmasheva\u2019s recent book titled \u2018No to War. The 40 Stories of Russians Opposing the Invasion of Ukraine.\u201d The book is a collection of interviews with Russians with an&nbsp;\u201canti-war stance,\u201d&nbsp;who are speaking out against Moscow\u2019s military operation in Ukraine, according to its description.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">RFE\/RL President Stephen Capus said that the trial&nbsp;\u201cmakes a mockery out of justice,\u201d&nbsp;and called for Kurmasheva\u2019s immediate release.US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller described Kurmasheva on Monday as&nbsp;\u201ca dedicated journalist who is being targeted by Russian authorities for her uncompromising commitment to speaking the truth and her principled reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">RFE\/RL was founded during the early stages of the Cold War to spread anti-Communist messages in the Soviet Bloc. It continues to be funded by the US government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In March 2022, Russia blocked access to RFE\/RL, citing&nbsp;\u201cthe publication of materials that contain false information about the nature of the special military operation\u201d&nbsp;in Ukraine.
