The feud between former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., continued on the Republican National Convention<\/a> floor Tuesday evening as the congressman tried to taunt his former colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaetz approached McCarthy on the convention floor in Milwaukee, while the former speaker seemed to be speaking with other people. The Florida Republican repeatedly tapped McCarthy’s shoulder and said, “What night are you speaking? Are you speaking tonight?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone seemed to shoo Gaetz away, but he didn’t back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hey, if you took that stage, you would get booed off of it,” he said. “You would get booed off the stage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Gaetz walked away, another man on the convention floor could be heard saying, “Shut up, Gaetz. Don’t be an a–hole.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News’ Tom Llamas later asked McCarthy in an interview about the confrontation with Gaetz, who was responsible for McCarthy’s ouster as speaker last October<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think it shows exactly who Matt Gaetz is,” said the former speaker, who when asked if he thinks he would get booed off the stage, he said, “Not at all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McCarthy said that Gaetz acted that way toward him because “he had an ethics complaint<\/a> four years ago that he paid an underage girl\u2002<\/a>and she has come to ethics.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And he came to me to try\u2002<\/a>to leverage me to stop the ethics investigation,” McCarthy said. “That\u2019s illegal. I\u2019m not doing that. If I had to lose my job over all the hump, the law. He tried to utilize it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House Ethics Committee said last month that it was reviewing allegations of misconduct against the Florida congressman. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaetz’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked if he thinks the Republican Party is more aligned with him or Gaetz, McCarthy said, “Well, I would hope there wouldn\u2019t be another Matt Gaetz in the Republican Party.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, “Look, everybody has different people in their party. Unfortunately, Matt happens to be here. I think at the end of the day, he probably shouldn\u2019t be on the streets.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
