President Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>on Thursday will enter another high-stakes moment in his re-election campaign when, under heavy scrutiny, he will face the media in a rare solo press conference where he is sure to be met with a barrage of questions over whether he can stay in the race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The press conference will close out the NATO summit<\/u><\/a> in Washington, where Biden has hosted world leaders this week. But the calamity around his 2024 bid since the June 27 debate with former President Trump has hardly subsided with reporters peppering the White House<\/u><\/a> with questions about his mental acuity, fitness for office and what sort of medical treatment he has received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Biden will face scores of journalists himself, setting up for another make-or-break moment that Democrats will also be watching<\/u><\/a> closely to determine how strongly they will back their own candidate in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a huge moment,\u201d a Democratic bundler told The Hill, adding that Biden has to do better than he did in the interview with ABC\u2019s George Stephanopoulos\u2002<\/u><\/a>that aired on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a tougher audience and a tougher set of questions too,\u201d the source said. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t know who\u2019s going to ask what. I think if he tries to wrap up quickly, doesn\u2019t take many questions, that will be a negative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ABC interview<\/u><\/a>, which was among his first fully unscripted event since the debate, didn\u2019t slow down calls for him to back out of the race. Stephanopoulos himself on Wednesday appeared to say\u2002that he doesn\u2019t think<\/u><\/a> Biden can serve another four years while being randomly stopped by a pedestrian in New York. Biden has another unscripted event on Monday,\u2002when he sits down<\/u><\/a> with NBC News\u2019 Lester Holt for an interview during a campaign stop in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Biden\u2019s political future in question, despite his clear calls that he isn\u2019t stepping aside, the press conference will act as another major test of his now troubled campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything\u2019s at stake, and that\u2019s the problem, because every day he\u2019s got to bat 1000,\u201d said Democratic strategist Michael Starr Hopkins. \u201cTomorrow he\u2019s got to hit 1000. The day after that, he\u2019s got to hit 1000. And I don\u2019t know how anyone can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopkins added that even if Biden performs \u201creally well\u201d at the press conference, \u201cthen it almost raises expectations for the next event. And so, it creates this narrative of uneven performances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf he\u2019s good, he\u2019s damned. If he\u2019s bad, he\u2019s even more damned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One senior House Democrat put as Biden has to \u201cchange the imagine of what took place at the debate. He\u2019s got to show that he can stand up and answer questions from the press and do it in an authoritative manner and in a coherent manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), meanwhile, said the presser had at least some potential to quell some of Biden\u2019s recent critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think a lot of people are gonna be watching that press conference. And so it\u2019s an opportunity for him to bring his A game and that would go a long way toward putting things to rest. Anything short of that is gonna be complicated,\u201d Huffman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The press conference is expected to be similar in length to other solo post-summit press conferences Biden has participated in, according to the White House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president\u2019s last solo press conference was in November in San Francisco on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit after he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier that day. That press conference was about 22 minutes long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the president doesn\u2019t receive questions ahead of a press conference from the media, the White House typically decides beforehand which outlets he will call on. He can, at times, spar with reporters over questions on matters he disagrees with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Democrats are optimistic that the press conference will go well but they argue that it won\u2019t change the trajectory for Biden, considering the damage to his political future post-debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI strongly doubt it\u2019s going to be similar to the debate performance,\u201d said Democratic strategist Jon Reinish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, he added, \u201cOne big boy press conference is not going to destroy what is a nearly-set narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u201cbig boy\u201d press conference launched last week when a reporter asked press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for the nature of events on Thursday and if it will be a \u201cbig boy\u201d press conference, meaning Biden would take multiple questions and stay on the stage for a long time and alone as opposed to a joint press conference with a world leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean-Pierre has since jokingly used the term to describe the press conference but the White House hasn\u2019t specified how many questions the president will take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden has been struggling to receive strong votes of confidence from his allies in the party since the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) caused an uproar on Wednesday when she told\u2002MSNBC<\/u><\/a>, \u201cit\u2019s up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We\u2019re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short,\u201d although Biden has been adamant that he is running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want him to do whatever he decides to do and that\u2019s the way it is,\u201d she added when pressed on if she wanted him to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Axelrod, top aide to former President Obama,\u2002called those comments<\/u><\/a> \u201cvery significant\u201d and noted that Pelosi is \u201ca very deliberate person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, several sitting House Democrats have called for him to step down, including Rep. Pat Ryan (N.Y.), who became the eighth sitting House Democrat<\/u><\/a> to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Biden fundraiser and actor George Clooney became Biden\u2019s most famous detractor when he wrote in an op-ed Wednesday that Democrats\u2002can\u2019t win<\/u><\/a> with Biden at the top of the ticket. Clooney hosted a star-studded fundraiser for Biden just last month.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The press conference now stands to elicit an uptick in Democratic lawmakers, donors, and operatives calling for Biden to step aside if he falters and has another poor unscripted public performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not going to be able to do anything where people are going to have their concerns from the debate mollified,\u201d said Alex Conant, a GOP strategist who has worked on multiple presidential campaigns. \u201cBut if he has a bad performance at the press conference or in an interview in two weeks, it\u2019s just fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
