{"id":29125,"date":"2024-07-01T21:46:57","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T02:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=29125"},"modified":"2024-07-01T21:47:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T02:47:01","slug":"biden-campaign-officials-seek-to-ease-donor-nerves-on-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=29125","title":{"rendered":"Biden campaign officials seek to ease donor nerves on call"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Biden campaign officials on a&nbsp;Monday night teleconference sought to ease the nerves of hundreds of Democratic donors, many of whom were wracked with doubt after the president\u2019s poor debate performance against former President Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But the call did little to assuage worries, according to several participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNo one feels good about this,\u201d said one prominent donor on the call. \u201cPeople have thrown their hearts and souls into this campaign and it could very well go south.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThere are still a lot of unanswered questions,\u201d the donor said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The campaign officials insisted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\"><u>President Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a>has not lost support despite the bad debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cVoters saw the debate, they took it in, and they didn\u2019t change their minds,\u201d Jen O\u2019Malley Dillon, Biden\u2019s campaign chair, told donors on the hourlong call that took place on&nbsp;Zoom, according to two attendees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">O\u2019Malley Dillon, who worked on former President Obama\u2019s presidential campaigns, compared Biden\u2019s bad showing to Obama\u2019s poor performance against Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in their first 2012 debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Still, she acknowledged that the campaign has \u201cmore work to do\u201d in order to calm doubts related to Biden\u2019s age. Biden will be 82 in November and would be 86 at the end of a second term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One donor who was on the call said the campaign would need to do more to assuage some concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cPeople are still raw from this and shocked, and we didn\u2019t really have our questions answered,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The campaign has had other calls with donors in recent days in an effort to calm the tension that erupted after the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But this was the first call donors were invited to ask questions. They could do so by typing them out in Zoom chat, not by asking the questions verbally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/chris-korge\/\"><u>Chris Korge,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;who serves as the finance chair of the Democratic National Committee, tried to ease what some have called Democratic bed-wetting. \u201cEveryone just needs to breathe through their nose for a minute,\u201d he told donors on the call, according to two sources. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Campaign officials blamed the media for \u201cblowing this out of proportion,\u201d but also sought to calm those on the call by pointing to fundraising figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At one point on the call, Biden\u2019s finance chair Rufus Gifford said the June fundraising numbers would be \u201cstrong.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One of the donors on the call who spoke with The Hill said while it was helpful to hear from campaign officials, they wanted to see evidence in poll numbers to be sure that Trump would not open up a big lead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI think we\u2019re all in wait-and-see mode,\u201d a second donor told The Hill. \u201cThis was very real, and they can\u2019t sugarcoat it. The proof will be in the pudding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A third donor who was on the call said the campaign has \u201ca lot of work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnd he needs to get out there, do more interviews, hold some town halls, address the elephant in the room, and keep going. But he needs to be out there and prove it himself,\u201d the donor said of Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Biden did go on camera&nbsp;Monday night&nbsp;to issue a statement about the Supreme Court\u2019s historic ruling on Monday that presidents generally have immunity from criminal prosecution for acts deemed official.
