{"id":28629,"date":"2024-06-19T05:25:35","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T10:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=28629"},"modified":"2024-06-19T05:25:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T10:25:39","slug":"black-advocates-to-use-juneteenth-to-demand-political-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=28629","title":{"rendered":"Black advocates to use Juneteenth to demand political change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As the nation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/4714154-juneteenth-federal-holiday-june-19\/\"><u>recognizes Juneteenth<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;this year, leading Black voices plan to use the holiday to call for widespread political changes and protections for Black Americans.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s not lost on any of us in the fight for social justice that this Juneteenth comes at a time when every right we\u2019ve won since the Civil War is under attack,\u201d Rev.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/al-sharpton\/\"><u>Al Sharpton,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;founder and president of the National Action Network, told The Hill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Though&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\/\"><u>President Biden\u2002<\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/respect\/equality\/559079-biden-signs-bill-establishing-juneteenth-as-federal-holiday\/\"><u>declared Juneteenth a federal holiday\u2002<\/u><\/a>in 2021, advocates have spent the last two years warning that civil rights for Black Americans are being washed away in a concerted effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe are on the eve of the anniversary of the end of affirmative action, the Fearless Fund remains under legal attacks, and some Black politicians claim we were better off under Jim Crow,\u201d Sharpton said. \u201cJuneteenth is a commemoration of the end of slavery, but it must also serve as a continuation in our fight for freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe should also spend this holiday rededicating ourselves to not only protecting the rights our ancestors marched and in some cases died for, but also advancing those rights and enshrining them into law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What is Juneteenth?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, declaring \u201cthat all persons held as slaves\u201d within the rebellious states \u201care, and henceforward shall be free.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But it took until June 19, 1865 for news of the Emancipation to reach Galveston, Texas. When Union soldiers arrived to enforce the order, the day became known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day \u2014 or simply: Juneteenth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Though the city of Galveston has celebrated Juneteenth since 1866, the push to make the day a federal holiday dates back more than 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But it wasn\u2019t until the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4685938-democrats-police-reform-george-floyd-death-anniversary-congress-2024\/\"><u>murder of George Floyd<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by Minneapolis police officers in 2020 that recognition of Juneteenth began to spread, according to Frederick Knight, a professor of history at Morehouse College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThere was a sense that we need to, as a nation, have this racial reckoning,\u201d Knight said. \u201cWith Biden\u2019s presidency, he in many ways fulfilled at least one of the promises of that summer of racial reckoning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Advocates say now is the time to lean into the legacy of Juneteenth in order to push back on what appears to be a backlash to Black success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Juneteenth for political change<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Wisdom Cole, senior national director of advocacy for the NAACP, said that in many ways, the last four years have been a political success for Black Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cole points to the White House\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4356667-white-house-launches-state-level-effort-gun-violence\/\"><u>establishment<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the first ever Office of Gun Violence Prevention late last year and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/4589702-biden-canceling-student-debt-for-more-than-277000-borrowers\/\"><u>cancellation of billions of dollars<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in student loan debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Juneteenth, he said, is the time when these successes can be celebrated and used to combat limitations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe impacts of Juneteenth and the impacts of freedom have to exist in our classrooms, exist in our boardrooms, exist in every single hall of power to ensure that there\u2019s opportunity for Black people to have access to that,\u201d Cole noted. \u201cJuneteenth\u2019s legacy has to be more than just a day of rest. It has to be an opportunity for us to access the future that we so deserve here in America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Earlier this month, a U.S. federal court of appeals&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/ap\/ap-business\/ap-a-grant-program-for-black-women-business-owners-is-discriminatory-appeals-court-rules\/\"><u>blocked<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;the Fearless Fund, a Black-owned venture capitalist firm, from awarding grants exclusively to Black women entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Meanwhile, education has come&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/3981990-college-board-takes-hits-from-all-sides-on-ap-african-american-studies\/\"><u>under the microscope<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as school districts have limited what aspects of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/ap\/ap-u-s-news\/ap-college-board-revises-ap-black-history-class-set-to-launch-in-2024\/\"><u>Black history<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;can be taught.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite polling from the Black Education Research Center at Teachers College at Columbia University last fall finding that a majority of voters want Black studies curriculum and the history of racism and slavery, and its legacy, taught in K-12 public schools, 44 states have introduced bills to restrict teaching critical race theory or limit how teachers can discuss racism and sexism, according to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/anti-critical-race-theory-laws-are-slowing-down-here-are-3-things-to-know\/2024\/03\"><u>Education Week analysis<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">African American history programs in Florida\u2019s public schools are now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4125593-desantis-faces-backlash-from-black-conservatives\/\"><u>required to teach students<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;that Black people benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2022, a conservative Tennessee parent group sued local and state education leaders for curriculum that it said is \u201creplete with racial discrimination, age-inappropriate material that causes children guilt, anguish, and other forms of psychological harm, it discusses the United States as an irredeemably racist country, and is overall hyper-focused on racial indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s important for us to teach Black history because our culture continues to carry the community forward,\u201d Cole said. \u201cWe are the culture in America; we are the trendsetters. We are the ones who are advocating not just for our communities, but for all communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some, like the Biden-Harris reelection campaign,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4714235-biden-touts-efforts-to-preserve-black-history-ahead-of-juneteenth\/\"><u>are using Juneteenth<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to encourage Black Americans to vote in the upcoming election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Juneteenth this year will be recognized as one of three National Days of Action on Voting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These days will focus on providing voters with the necessary information on how, where and when to vote, and will encourage students to register and cast their ballots. It also aims to counter voter-suppression tactics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The campaign\u2019s tactics are unsurprising \u2014 both Biden and former&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\/\"><u>President Trump\u2002<\/u><\/a>are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4720735-joe-biden-donald-trump-black-men\/\"><u>courting Black voters<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;ahead of November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Biden has been struggling in recent polls to match the historic support Democratic presidential candidates have won from the key party demographic, but he will have the help of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe will be doing events all throughout our districts to uplift the work of freedom \u2013 freedom for students to learn our full history, the freedom for people to thrive economically, to start businesses, to own homes, to invest in their communities, the freedom to love who you love as we recognize Pride Month, and the freedom for women to continue to have the right to make their own health care choices over their body at a time when these freedoms are under assault and being eroded,\u201d CBC Chair Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/steven-horsford\/\"><u>Steven Horsford\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D-Nev.) told The Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe believe that it\u2019s not only a time to honor the holiday of Juneteenth, but what it means and what it signifies and the fact that every generation has to continue to fight to protect our freedom,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The CBC especially plans to highlight the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201c\u200b\u200bWhat John R. Lewis really compels us to do every day is to protect our right to vote because that is the right by which every other right comes,\u201d Horsford said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Voting rights have remained a top-of-mind concern for Black leaders since the 2020 election. This year alone, at least 6 states have enacted 7 restrictive voting laws, making it harder for voters to cast their ballots, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. At least 291 restrictive bills have been considered in 40 states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But the CBC also plans to use the week of Juneteenth to promote its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cbc.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2502\"><u>Black Wealth Agenda<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cReally, Black America wants the same thing as any other community \u2013 we want to thrive,\u201d Horsford said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to just survive, we want to thrive.
