{"id":28562,"date":"2024-06-17T21:46:36","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T02:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=28562"},"modified":"2024-06-17T22:20:32","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T03:20:32","slug":"secret-service-agent-was-robbed-at-gunpoint-during-bidens-trip-to-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=28562","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Government Sues Adobe for Allegedly Making Cancelations Too Difficult"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2024\/06\/17\/u-s-government-sues-adobe-making-cancelations-difficult\/\"><br><\/a>The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have filed a lawsuit against Adobe for allegedly making cancelations for its online subscription service too difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Filed Monday against Adobe and two executives, the lawsuit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/digital\/news\/adobe-lawsuit-doj-ftc-online-subscriptions-canceling-1236040472\/\">alleges<\/a>&nbsp;that Adobe \u201cimposed a hidden early termination fee on millions of online subscribers and that Adobe forced subscribers to navigate \u2018a complex and challenging cancellation process designed to deter them from cancelling subscriptions they no longer wanted,&#8217;\u201d according to&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1356176\/dl?inline\">redacted<\/a>&nbsp;copy of the complaint said Adobe \u201csystematically violated\u201d the Restore Online Shoppers\u2019 Confidence Act (ROSCA) by using fine print and&nbsp;\u201cinconspicuous hyperlinks\u201d to hide vital information about the agreement, which included \u201cinfo about a significant early termination fees that customers may be charged when they cancel their subscriptions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Adobe allegedly \u201cprofited from this hidden fee, misleading consumers about the true costs of a subscription and ambushing them with the fee when they try to cancel, wielding the fee as a powerful retention tool.\u201d The company also violated ROSCA by allegedly failing to give subscribers an easy way to cancel recurring payments, subjecting them to a \u201cconvoluted and inefficient cancellation process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In a statement released on Monday, Adobe said it will fight the lawsuit and defended their business practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSubscription services are convenient, flexible and cost effective to allow users to choose the plan that best fits their needs, timeline and budget. Our priority is to always ensure our customers have a positive experience,\u201d said Dana Rao, Adobe\u2019s general counsel and chief trust officer. \u201cWe are transparent with the terms and conditions of our subscription agreements and have a simple cancellation process. We will refute the FTC\u2019s claims in court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Per&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>, the lawsuit seeks \u201cunspecified money to compensate consumers who were allegedly affected by the activity and civil fines on the defendants, as well as a permanent injunction to prohibit them from engaging in future violations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAs the government\u2019s lawsuit notes, Adobe\u2019s subscription revenue has nearly doubled in recent years. In 2019, Adobe earned $7.71 billion in subscription-based revenue,\u201d noted the outlet. \u201cBy 2023, subscription-based revenue accounted for $14.22 billion of the company\u2019s $19.41 billion in total annual revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton, head of the DOJ\u2019s Civil Division, said the government stands ready to enforce ROSCA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Justice Department is committed to stopping companies and their executives from preying on consumers who sign up for online subscriptions by hiding key terms and making cancellation an obstacle course,\u201d said Boynton. \u201cWe will continue to enforce ROSCA against those who engage in such misconduct.
