{"id":27725,"date":"2024-05-27T22:12:21","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T03:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27725"},"modified":"2024-05-27T22:12:27","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T03:12:27","slug":"teen-survives-400-foot-fall-from-canyon-in-washington-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27725","title":{"rendered":"Teen survives 400-foot fall from canyon in Washington state"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A teenager who plunged 400 feet from a dangerous canyon in Washington state over the Memorial Day weekend walked away with only minor injuries, the Mason County Sheriff\u2019s Office said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The teen was walking along a former trail beneath the High Steel Bridge,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wta.org\/go-hiking\/trip-reports\/trip_report-2021-06-20-7932703493\">one of the tallest\u2002<\/a>railroad bridges in the U.S., when he fell Saturday, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019ve told people to stay off these trails because they\u2019re dangerous, but people either haven\u2019t seen the warning signs or are disregarding it,\u201d said Tim Ripp, a Mason County sheriff\u2019s patrol corporal who was part of the rescue mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Authorities have not identified the teen, who sustained only scrapes to both of his arms and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/local\/teen-survives-400-foot-drop-canyon-shelton-bridge\/281-26a85558-bb56-43d2-b8d0-9f8e69bb54f2\">NBC affiliate KING<\/a>&nbsp;of Seattle reported that he is 19 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Five to seven people fall off the bridge every year, and the majority die, Ripp said, even though the&nbsp;area is being outfitted with scattered warning signs, including one describing how steep, slippery and unsafe the bridge is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During the two-hour rescue mission, deputies and firefighters used a rope and harness to scale the bridge and rescue the teenager, the county sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHooked him up into a harness and brought him all the way back up,\u201d West Mason Fire Chief Matthew Welander said, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/local\/teen-survives-400-foot-drop-canyon-shelton-bridge\/281-26a85558-bb56-43d2-b8d0-9f8e69bb54f2\">\u2002KING<\/a>. \u201cHe was walking down a washout that a lot of people use and has kind of become a trail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He ended up all the way down at the river, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Officials said a lack of respect for nature and not paying attention are part of the problem as people continue falling from the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Referring to the teen, Welander said, \u201cHe was incredibly lucky,\u201d the station reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/teen-survives-fall-canyon-washington-rcna154221\">Nbcnews<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A teenager who plunged 400 feet from a dangerous canyon in Washington state over the Memorial Day weekend walked away with only minor injuries, the Mason County Sheriff\u2019s Office said Monday.
