\u201cThe Apprentice,\u201d a new biopic about former President Trump\u2019s\u2002<\/u><\/a>rise in the real estate industry, did not clinch any awards at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biopic is directed by Iranian Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi and stars actor Sebastian Stan playing the then-New York real estate developer Trump and Jeremy Strong as Trump\u2019s real-life former attorney and mentor Roy Cohn. The movie reportedly received an eight-minute standing ovation<\/u><\/a> after it premiered at the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film failed to take home any awards, with the top prize going to \u201cAnora,\u201d<\/u><\/a> a romantic drama set in New York. Filmmaker Sean Baker became the first American to win the top award, the Palme d\u2019Or, since 2011 with that film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some reports about \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d said it depicted Trump\u2019s relationships with Cohn and his first wife, Ivana, in a negative light<\/u><\/a>. An attorney for the former president sent a cease-and-desist letter<\/u><\/a> to the filmmakers behind the movie on Friday, alleging that the film is \u201ca concoction of lies that repeatedly defames\u201d Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you do not immediately cease and desist all distribution and marketing of this libelous farce, we will be forced to pursue all appropriate legal remedies,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes after Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung\u2002<\/u><\/a>warned last week that the campaign would sue those<\/u><\/a> behind \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d film, alleging that it has \u201cblatantly false assertions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis \u2018film\u2019 is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn\u2019t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire,\u201d Cheung said in a statement last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film\u2019s producers told Variety<\/u><\/a> it was \u201ca fair and balanced portrait of the former president.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want everyone to see it and then decide,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Variety reported ahead of last week\u2019s premiere that Dan Synder, an investor in the film through film company Kinematics and an ally of Trump, was not happy<\/u><\/a> with the outcome of the movie, citing anonymous sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was reportedly furious and had Kinematics\u2019s lawyers come in to attempt to stop the release of the movie, according to Variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
