{"id":27472,"date":"2024-05-20T22:09:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T03:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27472"},"modified":"2024-05-20T22:09:47","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T03:09:47","slug":"outrage-over-police-violence-at-pro-palestine-rally-in-brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27472","title":{"rendered":"Outrage over police violence at pro-Palestine rally in Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Council members condemn NYPD\u2019s \u2018pre-emptive, retaliatory and cumulatively aggressive\u2019 conduct at protest on Saturday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Outrage was growing on Monday to a \u201ccumulatively aggressive\u201d response by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/nypd\">New York police department<\/a>&nbsp;to a weekend pro-Palestine street rally in Brooklyn, in which officers were caught on video beating protesters who had already been detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cellphone footage by witnesses at Saturday\u2019s gathering in Bay Ridge showed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/nypd\">NYPD<\/a>&nbsp;officers \u2013 including two wearing the uniforms of police commanders \u2013 punching at least three people on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One man was repeatedly punched in the ribs by an officer who had him pinned \u2013 while another protester was struck violently on the left side of his face as an officer pinned his head to the asphalt,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/19\/nyregion\/brooklyn-protest-palestinian-police.html\">according to the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cFrom my vantage point, the [NYPD] response appeared pre-emptive, retaliatory and cumulatively aggressive,\u201d the Democratic city council member Justin Brannan told the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThese were not our local cops. Clearly, there was a zero-tolerance edict sent down, which escalated everything and made it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A spokesperson for the NYPD said Monday that 41 people were arrested at the event, held annually in Bay Ridge to commemorate Nakba Day, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the Arab-Israeli war of 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI saw police indiscriminately grabbing people off the street and the sidewalk. They were grabbing them at random,\u201d Nerdeen Kiswani, an organizer with the pro-Palestinian activist group Within Our Lifetime, told the Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JustinBrannan\/status\/1792009029092356455\">an earlier tweet<\/a>, Brannan said he \u201csaw no evidence of actions by protesters today that warranted such an aggressive response\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He was joined in his criticism of the police actions by the Democratic state senator Andrew Gounardes, who told the Times he spoke with the commander of the 68th precinct before the protest and was not warned there would be such a heavy NYPD presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt certainly seems like the police came ready for a much more aggressive and a much more confrontational demonstration than perhaps they had gotten,\u201d he said, adding that videos of the violence he saw were \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The New York mayor, Eric Adams \u2013 a former NYPD officer \u2013 defended the police response on Monday, denying that officers were aggressive when they were arresting protesters,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/mornings-on-1\/2024\/05\/20\/adams-defends-nypd-s-handling-of-brooklyn-pro-palestinian-protest-\">NY1.com reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Meanwhile NYPD\u2019s deputy commissioner of operations, Kaz Daughtry, blamed the violence on the demonstrators, telling reporters it \u201cwas not a peaceful protest by some\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Officers were spat on and had water thrown at them, Daughtry alleged, accusing protesters of lighting incendiary devices and blocking streets. He claimed a third of the 41 people arrested had prior arrests \u201cfor other non-peaceful protests\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Donna Lieberman, executive director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\">New York<\/a>&nbsp;Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), accused police of \u201ca continual pattern of aggression\u201d against pro-Palestine demonstrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe aggressive escalation by the NYPD\u2019s strategic response group was a violation of New Yorkers\u2019 rights to speak out and risks chilling political expression,\u201d she said in a statement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCLU\/status\/1792276359827341694\">posted to X<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cNYCLU protest monitors witnessed violent arrests, protester injuries and even arrests of credentialed members of the press.
