{"id":27409,"date":"2024-05-20T04:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T09:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27409"},"modified":"2024-05-20T04:00:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T09:00:58","slug":"houston-distributes-water-as-more-than-300000-remain-without-power-after-devastating-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=27409","title":{"rendered":"Houston distributes water as more than 300,000 remain without power after devastating storms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The city of Houston on Saturday opened new distribution centers to give out water as thousands of customers remained without power following&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/7-dead-texas-harris-county-storms-100-mph-winds-rcna152874\">severe storms blamed in the deaths of seven people<\/a>&nbsp;in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Houston hit a high of 91 degrees Saturday as the city and Harris County recover from tornadoes and 100 mph straight-line winds that struck with little warning on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Seven deaths \u2014 four in Houston and three in unincorporated Harris County \u2014 have been blamed on effects from the weather, including from falling trees and a fire sparked by lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">More than 350,000 customers in Harris County, where Houston is located, were without power as of 3:30 a.m. local time Saturday, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poweroutage.us\/area\/state\/texas\">tracking website poweroutage.us<\/a>. At its peak, nearly 800,000 homes and business were without power&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/weather\/houston-texas-storms-damage-rcna152696\">after the storm.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOur crews\u2019 visual inspections and damage assessments of our infrastructure yesterday showed that we have a lot of hard work ahead in the coming days,\u201d CenterPoint Energy\u2019s Lynnae Wilson, senior vice president for the utility\u2019s electric business, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">CenterPoint, the utility company with the bulk of the outages, said Saturday night it estimated 80% of its effected customers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerpointenergy.com\/en-us\/corporate\/about-us\/news\/1746\">would have power restored<\/a>&nbsp;by Sunday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Three schools were damaged, one by a tree that fell into a classroom, another with around 12 windows shattered, and one that had a wall collapse in a classroom, Houston Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles said Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Miles called the relatively few buildings damaged districtwide \u201ca blessing.\u201d A decision will be made Sunday whether there would be school Monday, and a lot will depend on the electricity situation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cToday and tomorrow will tell a lot about power at these schools,\u201d Miles said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Approximately 90 of the district\u2019s more than 270 schools do not have power, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Harris County Judge Linda Hidalgo<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HarrisCoJudge\">\u2002said in a video message Saturday<\/a>&nbsp;night that residents affected by storms, or by floods in recent weeks, would be able to apply for federal aid in the form of loans to individuals and small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Houston faces another warm day ahead, with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s heading into next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf you are without power, and even if you are not &#8230; please make sure to practice heat safety by staying hydrated, take frequent breaks if working outside, and look before you lock!\u201d the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Elsewhere in the country, storms and severe weather are a concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The central and northern Plains were forecast to get storms starting Sunday, affecting around 2 million people in Kansas, southern Nebraska and northern Oklahoma.
