Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2002<\/u><\/a>said an interview excerpt of him saying there is \u201cno vaccine that is safe and effective\u201d has been \u201cmisused\u201d Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI made that statement on Lex Fridman[\u2019s] podcast,\u201d Kennedy said on HBO\u2019s \u201cReal Time with Bill Maher\u201d Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d host Maher responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd, it was an answer to a question that Lex had asked me about, \u2018Are there any vaccines\u2019 \u2014 and if you go back and look at this, \u2018cause that statement has been misused, I would never say that,\u201d Kennedy continued. \u201cWhat I said was, he asked me \u2018Are there any vaccines that are safe and effective?\u2019 And I said, \u2018It appears like some of the live virus vaccines, appear to be both safe and effective.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd then I said, \u2018There\u2019s no vaccines that are safe and effective,\u2019 and I was gonna continue that sentence, \u2018If you ask for the product to be measured against other medical products with placebo-controlled double-blind studies.\u2019 Lex interrupted me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an episode of Fridman\u2019s podcast from<\/u><\/a> July 2023, Kennedy said that \u201csome of the live virus vaccines are probably averting more problems than they\u2019re causing,\u201d when asked if he can \u201cname any vaccines that\u201d he thinks \u201care good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no vaccine that is safe and effective,\u201d Kennedy continued, before Fridman started speaking again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy has faced criticism in the past for his anti-vaccine activism, including<\/u><\/a> from members of his own family. His niece, Maeve Kennedy McKean, and siblings former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend\u2002<\/u><\/a>(D) and former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II (D-Mass.) said in a Politico column that his anti-vaccination work is \u201cwrong\u201d and \u201cdangerous\u201d in a Politico column from 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe challenge for public health officials right now is that many people are more afraid of the vaccines than the diseases, because they\u2019ve been lucky enough to have never seen the diseases and their devastating impact,\u201d the three wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s not luck; it\u2019s the result of concerted vaccination efforts over many years. We don\u2019t need measles outbreaks to remind us of the value of vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy told Maher during the Friday night appearance he is not \u201canti-vaccine,\u201d but that the label is a \u201cway of silencing\u201d him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m called that because it\u2019s a way of silencing me, but I have said for 17 years, I\u2019m not anti-vaccine. I just want good science. People should be able to make informed choices,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am against vaccine mandates,\u201d Kennedy added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
