{"id":26515,"date":"2024-04-26T04:33:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T09:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=26515"},"modified":"2024-04-26T04:33:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T09:33:46","slug":"mcconnell-argues-against-presidential-immunity-for-criminal-prosecution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ustower.net\/?p=26515","title":{"rendered":"McConnell argues against presidential immunity for criminal prosecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Senate Minority Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mitch-mcconnell\/\"><u>Mitch McConnell\u2002<\/u><\/a>(R-Ky.) said he doesn\u2019t think presidents should be immune from criminal prosecution for their actions in office, as the Supreme Court heard arguments on the issue related to former President Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Asked in a Thursday interview on NBC News\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/kristen-welker\/\"><u>Kristen Welker\u2002<\/u><\/a>if he believes a president is above criminal prosecution, McConnell deferred to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cObviously, I don\u2019t think that, but it\u2019s not up to me to make that decision,\u201d he said. \u201cThe president clearly needs some kind of immunity or he\u2019d be in court all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSo, we\u2019ll just see how the Supreme Court deals with it,\u201d McConnell continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On Thursday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4621749-supreme-court-justices-skeptical-of-sweeping-immunity-claims-by-trump\/\"><u>the Supreme Court heard<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;nearly three hours\u2019 worth of arguments from Trump\u2019s lawyers about why he should be immune from criminal prosecution in a case that alleges he plotted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Welker pressed McConnell on his 2021 comments and vote to acquit Trump after he was impeached by the House. At the time, he said Trump is liable for everything he did in office and hadn\u2019t gotten \u201caway with anything, yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">McConnell said he stands by his prior statements, but again, deferred to the decision the court will make in Trump\u2019s case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWe\u2019re gonna find out, aren\u2019t we? I mean, the Supreme Court is going to deal with that direct issue that I was referring to on Feb. 13, 2021. And I think we\u2019ll find out sometime soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Justices on the high court voiced skepticism about assertions from Trump\u2019s team that presidential immunity could extend to an attempted coup, even though they seemed ready to offer the commander in chief some protection from criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The landmark case could create new legal battles and delay the ones Trump currently faces.
