No survivors have been found,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/alaska\">Alaska<\/a>&nbsp;state troopers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The plane took off in the morning from Fairbanks international airport. It crashed about 7 miles (11km) from there and \u201cslid into a steep hill on the bank of the river where it caught fire,\u201d according to Alaska state troopers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Federal Aviation Administration described the plane as a Douglas C-54. Troopers identified it as a DC-4. The C-54 is a military version of the DC-4, which was a second world war-era airplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The National Transportation Safety Board was sending investigators to the site, said Clint Johnson, chief of the NTSB\u2019s Alaska regional office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Johnson said it remained unclear what happened in the time between the takeoff and the crash but that the tower operator \u201csaw a large plume of smoke\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Further information such as the flight\u2019s purpose and destination was not immediately available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/apr\/23\/plane-crash-river-fairbanks-alaska\">theguardian<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two people were onboard Douglas DC-4 that went down near Fairbanks on Tuesday, authorities say A Douglas DC-4 airplane crashed into the Tanana River near Fairbanks on Tuesday and burst into flames, authorities said.
